ADDENDUM 5/26/2013: The outdoor unit that reports the time, temperature, humidity and barometric pressure stopped working three days ago. I tried replacing the batteries, but the display screen is out. The indoor unit is not receiving anything from the outdoor unit. In less than a month, 1) The indoor unit did not work correctly; 2) The replacement indoor unit never worked; 3) and now the outdoor unit stopped working. This product is totally useless to me now. It's time to give another company a chance.
ADDENDUM 6/7/2013: Since 5/26, the Ambient people contacted me, and without me asking, sent me a new indoor unit and a new outdoor unit. I received them last night and set them up this afternoon. Everything on both units is working perfectly so far. The sunrise sunset times are correct. I do not anticipate any problems, but if there should be one, I will update this review.Read more ›
Other than that, it's a great weather clock.
8/8/2012 Update - In much less than the 3 month time period, I received a replacement unit that has been fixed. The firmware now allows for the correct input of longitude/latitude and sunrise/sunset times now match what the NOAA website calculates for my location. I've bumped the review from 3 to 5 stars because it's now exactly what I expected and the company made it right.
Complaints about accuracy I can't argue as the +/- accuracy is given. As the temp and Rh can be adjusted I took both units outside for a hour and then adjusted the indoor to match the outdoor. This way if I ever have a more accurate outdoor measure of them I know to adjust both by the same amount. I can get both from a good site, University of South Florida, USF, only two miles away but not on an instantaneous basis so a fraction different is to be expected on top of the local micro-climate.
What I did not expect was the top display of weather changes to be much more than a gimmick. But it has been giving predictions consistent with events. I didn't care because this is Florida and summer and if it is 4pm it is going to rain. The barometric pressure history reading appeared to be erratic and reset itself at first but now appears to properly report the history.
I got this to replace a simple indoor/outdoor temperature only gadget that quit working. I decided on this simply as the most features for the buck and not many more bucks than a minimal replacement. Frankly I could care less about the phase of the moon but for $3 more why not?
I have not assessed the value of dew point as a measurement of mugginess as yet.
At this point it is still just a fun gadget. But since we are just avoiding sticking our noses out or calling up a local weather website what else can it be?
But since it does appear to do what it claims beyond good enough for government work I may be able to figure out an issue from the previous two cheap temperature only devices.Read more ›
