After it was registered and working, I began using the internet connection as I normally would. Theoretical maximum speed for this modem is about 35Mbps, or 4.3 megabytes per second (MB/s). I only ever saw about half of that, and when I try to do ANYTHING using more than 1MB/s (8mbps) of bandwidth, I quickly lose connection altogether. It got to the point where I had to download software onto my PC to specifically limit the maximum bandwidth so I don't accidentally break the modem by mistakenly watching a video when Windows decides to download an update or something. I was able to go up to 1.5MB/s at times, but only for less than about two hours. limiting to 1MB/s is the only way to consistently keep the modem from disconnecting.
I don't know really why the modem loses connection. I would say it's a 50/50 chance it's either the modem or the cabling in my apartment. Using my good modem, I would occasionally have the same issue (twice in the year I've used this ISP, the modem lost connection, and I had to restart the modem by unplugging it,) but only after downloading large amounts of files, via torrent, near the maximum speed I pay for (150mbps, or about 18MB/s) for extended periods of time. So this modem could be garbage, or my cabling is just bad and my good modem has better error correction. I'm not sure.
So in my experience, it works as long as you are good with about 1/4 the speed that it is capable of. If you only have 12mbps or less available to you from your ISP, then this modem is a great, cheap way of dropping that hardware rental fee off your bill. If I ever use this modem again, it will be in a different location, and I will update this review if it ends up working any better.
- I signed up for time warner cable internet on Oct1, 2014
- to my shock there is an add USD 5.99 'modem rental' every month in the bill that I discover on 10/6/2014
- I have this modem delivered to my doorstep for under USD 25 on 10/8/2014
- I undo the wires going into the modem provided to me by time warner cable
- connect this modem to the corresponding wires (the coaxial cable, the power port and the Ethernet cable)
- call time warner and tell them you have a new modem to install. they will need the 'MAC' number/address from the modem
- let them walk you through some some steps of turning the modem on and off
- internet is working again, less the USD 5.99 per month charge
- return 'their' modem to 'them' on 10/9
Please note that this is not one of the 'approved' modems listed on time warner cables website. but it works - atleast for the basic internet speed that I got from them. this is just a 'modem', it is not a router and does not have wifi capabilities. I have my out wireless router that I connect this too. or you can connect the Ethernet output from this modem directly to your computer.
