I had to read the one and two star reviews. Really blasted, probably by armchair warriors.
This was shown to our recruit platoon, late in training, while out at the range.
DI's said it wasn't the best of movies but did show a lot of the things that we could expect in Vietnam. Where we were all expected to be within a year. It was a decent non govt training film and motivator. Also an unexpected break in the endless boot camp grind, and welcome surprise. I did an extended tour as a grunt, tank crewman and TC in 1967-68. It was less fun than the movie. What I could keep track of we lost at least 20% of our graduated platoon in RVN to KIA/WIAs.

With the big name actors, I expected something better. Very stilted acting performances, ZERO military accuracy as far as tactics, and just a very poor production quality. Script was devoid of any WWII 1940's reality. Was written by some spaced out Hollywood 1960's writers, and it shows.

Having been in the PI on active duty in the 1980's, however, I do recognize some landmarks (or at least, I think I do). Seems like it was shot at Subic or Cubi Point (final scenes). Way too modern a base for the Japanese during that period (red fire trucks?!!).

Anyhow, the movie's value for me was in bringing back a few memories. These old flicks always do. Heck, I grew up watching these kinds of movies.

Ambush Bay is a good World War II action drama about a Marine Corps reconnaissance team dispatched to the Japanese-occupied island of Siargao in support of a pending U.S. amphibious invasion. Their mission is to link up with a Japanese-American woman and radio back information she has on a coastal bay to be used for the assault. The reconnaissance turns into a raid after they learn that the bay is mined and are unable to warn higher headquarters due to the loss of their radio. The plot is interesting and the movie has a good cast with Hugh O'Brian as First Sergeant Corey, Mickey Rooney as Gunnery Sergeant Wartell and James Mitchum as Private Grenier. Mitchum's character as an airman radio operator assigned to the Marine team serves as the audience's observer and narrator for the story. O'Brian's character takes the lead early after their commander is killed, and Rooney's gives balance as a career Marine who doesn't take himself too seriously. While the movie has a good story, action-drama receives priority over tactical logic as the recon team stumbles into Japanese units, resulting in several firefights that whittle the team down to the main characters. The production features on-location filming in the Philippines, but the casting of Filipino actors as Japanese soldiers, and the use of a contemporary military base for the climatic sequence, waters down an authentic environment. Overall, it's a good "B" movie for action entertainment.

Solid flick but not an award winner

This is a good film overall - not a 5-start flick but neither is it as bad as some reviews suggest and has developed a bit of a cult following among living history folks for the relatively high historical accuracy portrayed (Japanese Sherman tank excepted). Filipino actors play Filipino characters, Japanese actors play Japanese characters which is rather refreshing especially since this movie was produced in 1966. The weapons are accurate and fire/sound like they should. The marines have 782's on their backs not just any old army gear out of the prop room. People die like in real combat and we are not forced to endure some melancholic soliloquy about it. The cinematography is also quite good and shot nearly all outdoors on location in the Philippines - some good directing was done out there and even if the sets were shot not too far from a road you certainly get the feel for being out in the jungle. It was neat that they used a real Filipino village for one of the scenes with lots of the locals participating. I also did not detect any stuntman either, - I think that Mitchum and O'Brian are actually in the dugout running down the river. (one wonders how many times some of the actors fell into the water while getting out of the PBY into their rafts and how many cuts were required before a good scene was shot hahaha). Predictable ending with the marines all dying in the end but the mission is completed. Now for the bad.......... the script is rather weak and the dialogue suffers as a result. The interesting plot line of the young Navy radio operator kidnapped by some marines to go on a dangerous mission way beyond his experience and training level was a great plot device and had lots of potential but was weakly pursued throughout the film and James Mitchum seems a bit weak in the key role and in need of some acting classes. Also some additional effort could have been made to develop the character and the portrayal of the Filipino guide. I think the whole radio controlled deep water mines in 1944 concept was a bit iffy too.... However, Tisa Chang was a nice refreshing addition to the cast and does a good job. Could work for an excellent re-make.

It really is painful to watch some of the scenes as this WWII movie just does not cut the mustard. A cast of B actors (Hugh O'Brian, James Mitchum and a past his sell by date Mickey Rooney) slogging away in the jungles of the Philippines. The plot line is very thin and the secret mission troupe that land on the island get killed off one by one in succession. And then one is expected to believe that James Mitchum (a simple military radio operator) has the know how to operate and thwart the Japanese mine system off the shores of the island (all labelled in Japanese of course) before the American invasion. Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss; watch a very good WWII movie like the Battle of Britain.

I remember going to see this film in the local flea pit when I was about 11 or 12 Then I thought it was the greatest war movie I had ever seen. So when I spotted it on amazon I thought I would relive some of my youth You know the sort of youthful exuberance that comes from being a young boy, who with his friends had no time for girls or such like, and saturday matinees had to be a western or a war film and your favourite 6 shooter with a roll of red caps was tucked into your snake belt :-)
50+ yrs later I would like to change that view. The blood was kethcup and the acting wooden I think it would have been better to keep my rose tinted memories rather than watch it
Im not sorry I bought it ( for nostalgia reasons) but if Im lucky it will be another few decades before I watch it again ;-)
