I have read the reviews that state that the post is mismatched and doesn't screw in correctly, and that may be true, I honestly have never used the post in the middle, as I really just wanted a platform to steam things like fillets of fish and chicken breasts, and the post would have just been in the way of a decent sized cut of fish/chicken.
It functions exactly the same as other more expensive brands, so if you're looking for a good deal, I would recommend this adjustable steamer basket.
The center post and ring have not yet been too hot for me to lift the steamer from a pot. I then fold out the sides so I can slide off the steamed vegetables into whatever dish I'm preparing. This item replaced a Black and Decker steamer. The capacity of which I no longer needed, particularly it's rice cooking ability, having bought a separate unit for that.
This collapsible steamer has made kitchen life easier for this live-alone grandpa.
We need to get back to eating more vegetables and this is a ridiculously easy way to do it. Be sure to steam up a rainbow of colors.. carrots, zucchini, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, the more colors the better! I usually clean/chop up a large batch of veggies and put them in a snap lock container to keep them around for a while. Then I either steam a batch to go along with dinner, or steam a few batches and let them cool at room temp, then place back into snap lock container into the fridge so I can reheat them later at work.
Fits all of my pots and pans, and quite simply works. So far, this incarnation of it has not had even the slightest tinge of rust, unlike the one I remember from my childhood.
The center split ring is handy for grabbing with tongs or an oven mitt.
Good for shrimp and veggies and all manner of other steamable-things. Just watch the water level (esp. on shrimp -- you want to steam, not boil them, or you'd not be using this tool) and you'll be golden.
