I set mine up through wifi, using an 64gb sd card as storage. I add cameras through my android phone app. The app has more indecipherable symbols you have to guess with for settings. I prefer to adjust my settings through my pc desktop program. It gives you a good amount of settings to adjust, which can be daunting, finding your way around and make sure to save your settings after you change them! The add camera process is kind of weird. It asks you to use "admin" as your username and password at first then, you change your password to something else. Other quirks involve download destination; on my pc, after closing the program, it defaults to a default folder even when I change and save the destination. On my 1080p cameras, I previously had connection issues for viewing on my app, seemingly due to incompatibility with my wifi mesh network, but a firmware release seems to have fixed that issue. If you're going wi-fi, make sure you have a strong signal.
Hardware: pan tilt is fast. It cannot look down as far as the Foscam but that can be mitigated with the included mount. The 90 degree viewing angle addresses my need to see enough while not sacrificing resolution. The resolution and picture quality is crisp with well balanced colour. The speaker is loud enough and mic is sensitive enough.
Software: buggy and barely alpha. Should not have been released in this state. To manage with a browser, you would need to dust off that insecure Internet Explorer or use Firefox. Chrome does not load plug-in. You have to directly call the plug-in which is not a something a regular end user would do.
The IOS app could use a workflow redesign. But it has some good points: push notification. Ease of setup by scanning QR Code. And it streams to an external network as a result of this quick setup.
Email Time Bug:
One of the bugs is when the camera emails the events and the photo time stamp is correct but the email time stamp is off by the difference in timezone to GMT. This is even when the camera is set to the correct time zone and all POP and SMTP server time zones have been verified to match. The Foscams don't have this issue. The Amcrest forum shows that this issue has been visible for months but the engineering team is still hasn't fixed it.
Send Event videos and captures to FTP:
It generates a deep folder nesting based on time segments e.g. \\fileserver\webcam\CAM_ID\2016-10-16\001\jpg\18\27. This makes it difficult to browse and view to the artifacts. The support team suggests using Amcrest Smart Play but this software does not have be ability to pull in the nested folders into a simple view.
This cam pic is GREAT. This would be by best cam yet if all the features worked on it.
I got around and set it up last night and thought the PTZ was a weird, but it was working. I really did not test it that much as it was getting dark and since it's in a window, the night vision part does not work well because of this. I knew this going in. So this morning when I should the wify, the PTZ would not return to the presets I had set up. Also manual was not working. To get it back to where yo want it, you have to move around until it starts moving slowly back to were you want it. Looks to me it's just the up and down movement. Not sure, but I think the left to right works.
The pic on this thing is wonderful. With the digital zoom, I can see things I could not see before before the image became pixelated. I have several other cams (Logitech 920 and 930) in the window to and this Amcrest blow them away on day time views.
Setup was easy, I already had the Amcrest software on my dedicated computer that is running BlueIris. When I open the Amcrest program, the cam was listed already. (I added the ethernet cable and powered it up first) All the info was there if needed, but Blueiris found it right away.
Although I did not use my phone for setup, it looks easy also.
So I am going to exchange this and try again. I might read through the reviews and see if this is a common issue. If it is, I'll just return it and go high end cams. I really don't need the pricier ones if this would work, so we will see.
I added a pic on my window setup and also a video to show how the preset work and if you look at the beginning where the level of the cam is set, it will not go back. I hit a preset 1, it goes to the deck, then I hit preset 1 and it goes back to the dirt road (just like the started), then I hit preset 2 and it goes to the big oak in the middle of the yard. THEN I do a manual up and then that's when it will not longer go back down after hitting preset 1 again. Now it's looking up hill and will not return to where it was at the beginning. I try manual and it would not go back down. I ended the video as it was getting large and was not sure how long it would take to get it back.
Also, keep in mind that Amazon lowers the res on the video. I'll add a YouTube link in the comment section of this review
Amcrest responded after I sent it back to Amazon and the seller do not do exchanges???? Only option I had was to return it.
I did reorder it at regular price. I had ordered the original on the "Today's Deals" here on Amazon. I tried to hold out, but to be honest, I never seen it on there before and figured it was a rare thing.
I set this up as soon as I got it today and I'll update if any issues. So far all good.
