When I received everything, the first thing I did was power everything up in my den and pair the cameras then so I could see everything worked. It did. The only thing I noticed was the one seemed to have a weak signal so I re-paired it (takes about 5 seconds) and it worked fine. I then took the base unit which will work for a short time on internal battery and went to the basement of my house to make sure it stayed paired - it did.
I then unplugged the cameras and started installing them. No issues. In fact I didn't need to re-pair them, it recalled the cameras on it's own.
I then downloaded the app and installed it on my android based phone. Then I plugged in the ethernet cable from my base unit to my wireless router. [NOTE: The base unit is wireless as far as receiving the cameras - it will not connect to a wireless router without a cable] The I added the unit through the app. Works great!!
I can view all my cameras live on my phone (one at a time). Plus it saves and notifies me anytime there is a "triggering event", meaning motion that causes recording. When you are looking at an individual camera you can tap the speaker button and listen to any audio that camera is "hearing." At any given moment I can see what is happening anywhere in or out of my house that I have a camera covering.
The only thing I can say about those that had issues is either they were not following the directions/their equipment is not correct (router/phone)/or not using the devices within their intended parameters. It's also possible they had a faulty device, but two of my cameras were "used" from Amazon (guess they were returns?), but they came in the original box with everything and worked perfectly. Not sure why they were used other than I got them $10 cheaper. The description said the box was damaged, but mine were not.
Can you get a fancier system with better picture? Probably, but for more money. By nature of my employment I look at surveillance video form multiple places to include homes/banks/retail. I will tell you this better quality than I have seen at some stores and banks. Yes, the night vision is not the greatest, but then I'm home usually overnight and will be able to confirm to the police that the guy with a hole in him on my floor is the same guy on the camera that was breaking in.
Do it . . . you need these cameras.
UPDATE 06/02/16 - The system still works great. The one thing I noticed is you will have to play with the sensitivity settings depending on where the camera is. One was capturing too many blowing shrubs. The other missed whatever animal was getting into the planters on my front porch.
The best use I have found so far is that I can see real time when a package is delivered to my front porch so I can shoot home to get it if it's something I don't want to risk being stolen. Hopefully I'll never need to for an actual criminal act, but I feel better with them there. Another benefit is you can watch your house while out of town.
Camera footage has been used twice from this system by the sheriff's department. I am buying an additional, 4th camera soon.
This system is perfect. It works independently from the internet, but if you need to use the phone/tablet app, you have the ability to connect to the web. It comes with a CAT5 cable but it's not necessary if you're not connected to the internet, as in my case. Everything you need is in the box. Instructions are comprehensive and are actually in *readable* English. Installation took me 10 minutes. It would have taken 5 but after mounting the camera under my porch and turning on the monitor, I saw that the view was obstructed and I had to re-position the unit. My camera is located about 13' from the outlet and as you can see in the photo, there's about a foot of cord left. The camera is weatherproof and has a metal case, not plastic. If you only use the single provided camera there is no manual pairing to do. It's ready to go right out of the box. The camera defaults to VGA quality but I increased mine to "HD" (720p) quality. With this setting I can very clearly see the gate at the front of my property - a distance of about 50 yds. - daytime and nighttime. Settings are made on the monitor and the monitor is touchscreen. I question the location of some of the settings. For example, alert sensitivity is on the "Record" page, not the "Alert" page. Shrug. After messing with it for a few minutes I got it to work just fine. The programmers will claim that it's a feature not a defect anyway so I didn't deduct any stars.
As vehicles pull onto the property, the system alerts me and begins recording automatically. The microphone is very good also. I can actually hear vehicles coming just before the system alerts. It's so sensitive that I can hear my dog's tags when he walks near the camera. All of this plus volume is configurable in settings.
One problem I'm having is that once the system detects movement and starts to alert, it doesn't stop after movement ceases. I've played around with the settings but haven't had any luck. I'm going to call customer service and I'll let you know how that experience goes.
BTW...One reviewer said the unit couldn't be suspended because the set screw interfered with the antenna. I saw the same thing but remember, the mounting base can be rotated 180 degrees on one axis and 360 degrees on the other. With a little fiddling I got the set screw to sit on the opposite side from the antenna as you can see in the pic. Hope this helps.
I thought that I had the mobile app installed and working but it only worked when the Ethernet cable was connected to the monitor. I'll be calling customer support. I'll do a further update after that. Still, setting up the cameras and monitor wasn't a problem.
Again, read the directions. The monitor has to be connected to the Ethernet cable for remote viewing. I still haven't installed it on my iPad but I now have it on my iPhone. I love the little monitor. I can keep a constant on my front gate without having to interrupt my tv viewing. I live in a small house so a large monitor would be nice but would take up too much room. I'm a 60 year old woman and was able to set up this security system myself with two cameras. I want to add two more.
