Review
“Ms. Rich vividly evoke[s] the tragic aspect of Amelia Earhart.”—New York Times Book Review, Notable Book
“Earhart emerges as a complex, controversial, and fascinating flesh-and-blood woman of many facets. . . .Well-researched and intelligently written.”—Chicago Tribune
“Defines Amelia Earhart by her courage, generosity, and determination, and not by the way her life ended.”—American Heritage
"Rich's portrait reveals a determined, independent woman, brave enough 'to go where no one had gone and to do what no one had done' ... [and] illuminates the public and private life of a legendary flier, bringing her back to earth as a courageous woman who dreamed and dared all." —Christian Science Monitor
"Rich is a gifted writer ... A fascinating and inspirational tale of Earhart's fight for equal rights, international peace, and a world where flying would be accessible to all." —San Francisco Chronicle

Surprised to find a legend who deserved by all measures of her character to be a heroine. Male biographers might have emphasized her flying skills and love of adventure. Doris Rich covered her social and emotional life in more detail than her flying feats. Too many heros are flawed people, she wasn't. I respect Amelia for her choices that benefitted her family, friends and country more than her own. She respected her fans and supporters with tireless public contact to be the best aviation spokesman in 1930's. This author tries to cover a complex persons life and gets the human side about right. Other books may detail the flying adventures better.
If you knew the state of hand-tuned av radios, the variable nature of low-frequency transmissions, and especially the challenge of finding an island in the Pacific- she was gambling with her life. Read the last chapters to catch her final hours, and in the epilogue, interviews with knowledgeable sources in the Navy, U.S. and Japanese authorities.
Good pictures, well footnoted.

Amelia's life right along with her. A "winner"... Book clubbers will enjoy it.
