Ardent leftists will, no doubt, give their full effort to dismantling the premise without actually attacking the argument, but I encourage anyone who cares about politics, religion, or international affairs to read this well-done book. Even if you spend the entire time trying to find holes in the argument, its still an enjoyable read.
Unfortunately it's already a little dated, and things have gotten MUCH worse.
How much worse do they have to get before we wake up ?
The themes are bang on, as relevant today as ever before. It's also the stuff we do not want to hear. We want to believe that all of us are wrapped in the same silken covers. We will protect each other from the cold, and the wind and freezing rain. But with our Muslim brothers, that's not how they see it. We are not going to be co-survivors on a futuristic Noah's Ark.
Steyn does provide a roadmap on how to reform Islam from the inside. Most points are realistic, but not a single reform has occurred anywhere in the Islamic World.
The probabilities of reform did look good during the period of the 'Arab Spring', but Syria, ISIS & the weakness of the leaders of the USA and Europe towards the daily terror threats, have turned parts of the West into Police States. Rather than hearing stark responses from EU leaders on the nature of the problem, a million refugees have entered it's porous borders, with the EU providing succor to the next generation of jihadists from within their ranks.
We in the West seek to understand the meaning of life in an enlightened way, valuing all cultures as relevant to the human experience. Perhaps the continual dripping of innocents' blood, intrusions into our civilized, sane World, by callous and crippled savages, will lead us to reconsider our premises. If our argument on understanding the role of jihad can't stand the test of reason, then we are following the wrong premise.
And, it really is worth reading what Mark Steyn has to say in this book. This book is about a really big trend happening under the radar (both the sensationalism radar and the ideological radar) of the mainstream political correct media.
Essentially, what we might think was the "end of history" when the Soviet Union collapsed was no such thing. History just entered another phase. In the next phase, people with other world views are going to dramatically out breed the "Western World", and this is going to change the world.
Mark Steyn, with his clever and very readible style, introduces us to this trend and attempts to project it's consequences over the next century or so. It isn't pretty. The "post modern generation" is aptly named indeed, because "post modernism" may only last a single generation, to be replaced by the "re-primitivised generations" for a long time.
This is very sobering and scary to think about. I likely will not live to see this, but my grandchildren will. (Ironically, the huge numbers of westerners who have decided not to have children have no need to worry about what kind of world their children or grandchildren live in, and that's the problem.)
So, read this book and see some of tomorrow's headlines today. You won't be surprised when the next wave of immigrants is from Europe.
The one huge weakness of this book, and the reason I could not give it five stars, is the lack of a bibliography. There are lots of quotes with no references. It's like you just have to take Steyn's word for it. The subject matter covered in this book is way too important to publish without thorough referencing. Would this have been so difficult? All this information came from somewhere, and from reading the text it's possible to trace down some of it, but it still needs a bibliography.
A typical agenda driven Armageddon book, it has things to say that everyone should read and be aware of. And these things are real and they ARE happening. If Europe can't think of something to do to maintain their traditions, laws, and values, they will all be relegated to dusty history books. We could be next.
