American Cars of the 1960s is a beautifully executed book by the Editors of Consumer Guide. Though not a highly detailed study of the cars of that decade, it gives a reasonably in depth review. Most of the illustrations are taken from manufacturers' brochures which is good enough though I would like to have seen some photographs of some nicely restored examples. When I saw this book on Amazon.com, I thought that it would be more like another book, that I had gotten a few years ago, also by the same edditors, called Cars of the Fabulous 50s: An Era of High Style and Good Times. It is a much larger tome than this one and goes into much more detail, going into every make and model. And it includes not only the automobiles, but other subjects, pertaining to cars such as automotive product advertisments, pictures of dealerships, etc. . I was a bit taken aback when I saw the much smaller size of American Cars of the 1960s. I had been expecting something more akin to the other book. In fairness, however, my copy arrived in the predicted time and is in extremely good condition with only a few minor and ignorable blemishes. For only $5.76, who can complain?

The first car I bought when I became old enough to drive was a 1961 Corvair Monza. It's here along with some of my other cars I owned way back when. It's fun to see many of the old car brochure illustrations and pictures. As a kid I collected many of these brochures at the Chicago Auto Show. It's fun to have them back again to bring back memories.

What a fun book. Mostly accurate (as always when presenting SO much information, a few errors). The pictures are great; the trivia a kick; it'll transport you back to a short window of history when, well, stuff was just a little more fun. I think you'll enjoy it! Thanks, Dave (in Colorado)

Oh yes, these are the cars driven by me in the 6o's when I was a teen ager. That is when gas was only 25 to 30 cents a gallon and we drove these big American made US STEEL cars up and down the highways. They were comfortable, safe and tough. Look around and you will see a lot of these beauties still running up and down the highways today. This book came to me quickly and in brand new condition. I would recommend this seller to any one.

The Auto Editors of Consumer Guide churn out plenty of titles like Cars of the 40s; 50s; 60s or 70s. This book is slightly different from their others because of its compact square size and it has a companion title of 1950s cars: American Cars of the 1950's . I quite enjoyed the 50s edition with the contents essentially illustrations from ads of the time, this 1960s book combines photos and art so I don't think it is quite as interesting. Both are really nostalgic flavor guides to what Detroit thought the public wanted and bought.

The sixteen marques get a spread or two each presented in chronological order with minimal text so if you are after technical specs look elsewhere. The presentation is breezy with plenty of colored panels. As all the material is taken from period ads I thought Taschen's Cars of the 20th Century: 100 Years of Automotive Ads, 1900-1999 a far superior title though it does cover a hundred years of auto ads.

Certainly not the know all/be all book covering 1960s American automobiles, but fun nonetheless. Having grown up w these cars and the advertising associated with them, I was certainly caught up in a wave of nostalgia. Nice, quick overview of the year to year evolution of American cars during the 1960s. Easy read, fun for the novice. Might be a little on the fluff side for true auto buffs, but for those of a more casual bent this book is time well spent.

A great little book. I refer to it quite often to Identify a particular model. I like the artwork, which is of it's time and makes for a very colourful era.
