American Burke: The Uncommon Liberalism of Daniel Patrick Moynihan (American Political Thought) Hardcover – February 23, 2015

In its incisive analysis of Moynihan's political thought, American Burke lays out the terms for such a recovery. The book traces Moynihan's development through the broad sweep of his writings and career. "The central conservative truth is that it is culture, not politics, that determines the success of a society," Moynihan once wrote. "The central liberal truth is that politics can change a culture and save it from itself." In his ability to embrace both of these truths, this "American Burke" makes it bracingly clear that a wise political thinker can also be an effective political actor, and that commitments to both liberal and conservative values can coexist peaceably and productively. Weiner's work is not only a thorough and thoroughly engaging intellectual exploration of one of the most important politicians of the twentieth century; it is also a timely prescription for the healing of our broken system.

About the author

Greg Weiner’s research and teaching converge at the intersection of political theory and the Constitution. An associate professor of political science at Assumption College, he is the author of American Burke: The Uncommon Liberalism of Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Madison’s Metronome: The Constitution, Majority Rule and the Tempo of American Politics, both published by the prestigious American Political Thought Series of the University Press of Kansas. His book Old Whigs: Burke, Lincoln, and the Politics of Prudence was released by Encounter Books in June 2019, and his The Political Constitution: The Case against Judicial Supremacy is forthcoming from Kansas.
Weiner's research and teaching interests include the political theory of the Constitution, the political thought of James Madison, civil liberties and the role of the Supreme Court.
Winner of the nationally awarded Jack Miller Center's Chairman's Prize for the best dissertation in American Political Thought, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Political Theory Project at Brown University and has taught at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins Universities.
Weiner's research and teaching are informed by the several years he spent as a high-level aide and consultant in national politics, including serving as Communications and Policy Director to U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey, D-Nebraska, and as founder of the Washington, D.C.-based speechwriting firm Content Communications, LLC.

Burke was the antithesis of the libertarian, government has no role, right. He did believe as did Moynihan that there is a private sphere. Moynihan favored programs that increased the probability of self sufficiency for the able bodied. Rather than create social worker jobs, he would try to put some money in the pockets of people who were working, or trying to work. I heartily recommend this interesting and insightful little book.

gs, and political wisdom. It helps me understand why we desperately need these gifts in public leadership especially the United States Senate..
