George Washington, James Madison, Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, Andrew Jackson, Winfield Scott, U.S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and John L. Lewis all rolled into one. The book is well written and thorough, although a bit too gossipy. The author fails to grasp, or at least to acknowledge, that the aggressive and self-reliant MacArthur was working at cross-purposes with the collectivist U.S. Administration, which appears to have viewed the Philippines as an Asian version of France that should have capitulated rather than resisting its enemy. The General himself seems to have come close to recognizing this, but had enough political astuteness not to assert it overtly, except in the case of Dean Acheson, Harry Truman, and the United Nations, merely presenting sufficient evidence in his even better-written 'Reminiscences' for an observant reader to reach such a conclusion on his own.

Masterful biography

This is a superb biography. Manchester has a great narrative voice and does a wonderful job sorting through the relevant and irrelevant. I often get bored by biographies that overplay personal backgrounds, childhoods, family, etc. But Manchester strikes a balance between ignoring and overplaying those things.

The best thing about this book is that Manchester approaches it very clear-eyed. He is willing to praise MacArthur when appropriate, but also willing to criticize him when he was wrong. MacArthur was brilliant, but he was also very flawed. Equal treatment is given to his command during WWII and the Korean War. The narrative is gripping and wonderfully written. Battle details are included when necessary, but are not overdone, so non-military buffs can still enjoy this book.

Though he does make a couple references to Julius Caesar, Manchester never really fleshes out his title. I can certainly make some connections between MacArthur and Caesar, but I also see a lot of contrasts. I wish Manchester had made his view a little clearer.

Nonetheless, this is a masterful biography and I highly recommend it.
