The Mithras Conspiracy (Lido Press: 2019) , a historical and religious mystery, was my first novel. Although related to that novel, American Conspiracy (Lido Press: 2021) can be read as a standalone political thriller with some common characters. American Conspiracy draws upon my many years as a lawyer, a professor of constitutional law, and the fateful presidential election of 2016.

Born and bred in Chicago, M.J. Polelle is an emeritus professor of the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he practiced civil litigation in Chicago before becoming a law professor at De Paul University College of Law and then at the UIC-School of Law where he taught constitutional law. At UIC-School of Law, formerly John Marshall Law School, he co-taught a comparative law course in Parma, Italy with an Italian professor and served as a Special Assistant State’s Attorney for several years. THE MITHRAS CONSPIRACY, a historical and religious mystery, was his first novel. It was a finalist in both the Eric Hoffer Book Awards and the Royal Palm Literary Awards of the Florida Writers Association. It also received an IndieBRAG Medallion for placing in the top tier of novels submitted for review. His second novel,, AMERICAN CONSPIRACY, is a political thriller. Jim Murphy finds himself being punished for a crime he did not commit. Not only that, but the investigation is led by his brother Bryan, an investigator from The Justice Department. However, Jim does not succumb to this situation and decides to jump right into an investigation only to be joined by the president itself. Together they have to work to put light on a conspirational menace.
I really enjoyed this book, author M. J. Polelle works closely with the law and has a great skill with the pencil, therefore he manages to create a great story filled with details and passion. Mystery meets crime investigation and detective work to the core! It is highly intriguing and I felt I needed to know what was happening next so I couldn’t put down the book right until the end! Such a fun reading!

This thrilling novel combines the perfect thrilling ingredients: murder, corruption, conspiracy, political affairs, detectives, and so much more. The president is killed and a detective has to solve this murder mystery now. As investigation unfolds many twists are revealed and corruption is found out – typical of politics!

Won’t write much here to not spoil your read, but definitely recommend it.

Overall the story builds up at a fast but steady pace, which makes it easier to grasp the whole plot after a while. The writing style is engaging and keeps you hooked till the end.

With the presumed president-elect assassinated, the future of the US is at stake, and detective Jim Murphy seems to be responsible because of a moment of distraction. Is that so? There’s so much more to be discovered within these pages.
Although at some point I felt the story a bit slow, reaching the end things speed up and the action makes the reading difficult to put down. The twists present in the story were one of the things I liked the most. I recommend reading it.

Constitutional thriller

It would be better labelled, American corruption! The story has two major threads, linked partly by the main character, Jim Murphy, who is a Chicago detective. However, things go sour when the man with supposedly the most electoral college votes after the 1928 election stops his motorcade and gets out of his car and is assassinated. At the same time Murphy has been distracted recovering a kid’s ball. Since the electoral college has yet to meet, now what? (In my opinion what follows isn’t quite right – we still have the lame duck President, but (s)he doesn’t get a mention.) The other thread relates to corruption in Chicago, headed by an old man who has murdered a number of young “gangbangers” for a treatment where he gets young and they get older. The murders are simply to get rid of the evidence.
I nearly gave this five stars. The build-up to the end is excellent and the end-game starts about ¾ of the way through. For the next ten per cent the tension, etc. is handled extremely well. Unfortunately, I felt the last few percent of the story let itself down. Also, if Jim is a detective and he has a clue to put away a villain but he hasn’t got enough evidence, what should he do? A little police work, like interviewing potential witnesses? So the story has good struct at the start, the characters are distinct and believable, the descriptions are good, but it lets itself down slightly with loose ends, which is partly because there is an awful lot of stuff in the story. Whatever else, you should not be bored.

This story is quick to grab you and pull you into the action. There weren't a lot of twists and turns, but it was an interesting and entertaining pathway to the end. I liked that while there was a lot of build up toward the end, the end was drawn out so that it didn't feel abrupt. There were some lose strings, but nothing major to keep the story from feeling complete; however, there were some plot points that I felt could have had more attention, such as the VP story. I think that it was cut out thought because there is just so much else going on in this story that it would have been hard to squeeze more in without detracting from the plot. The dialogue was snappy without being cliché but some of the plot points (mafia/gang clichés) seemed a little overdone. Overall, a good read with some length to it. If you're interested in political thrillers, I would definitely recommend it.

American Conspiracy by MJ Polelle is a wonderful thriller novel that is full of twists and suspense and action. The US President-elect is assassinated because Detective Jim Murphy of the Chicago PD was distracted during a parade, allowing the assassin a clean shot. The crime is being investigated by a rival of Det Murphy. This tells the tale as Murphy gets into the investigation and Congress takes control of the election. I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. It was very interesting and I loved how Murphy feels so guilty for something that, at the time, seemed so small until the assassination. Small changes and tiny distractions can truly make a big difference, can't they? This book is filled with small little details in the inner workings as the investigation goes on. Definitely a must read!
