Good story, slightly marred by some minor issues

I knew the back story behind this novel - that four authors collaborated on a train and then wrote a story about that very train ride, although with demons etc. It sounded interesting so I dipped into a genre I do not normally read. The good: it was a thrilling page turner and it did not feel like a collaborative effort, it was well put together. The not so good: I fell out of the story a couple of times when there were VERY convenient, almost contrived happenings that helped the plot along, eg: when one of the characters just happened to find a slip of paper the other character dropped with the exact train ride that character was going to go on, plus a couple of times when doors were open on the train so it was easy for the characters to interact/ find each other. Doors that really wouldn't necessarily be open. I am also concerned that some 'black' or 'African American' minor characters (train attendants etc) were identified as such but other (presumably white) characters were not described in the same way. Overally, these were minor issues in an otherwise enjoyable book (if you enjoy lots of blood and gore and demons).

I received this book as an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
I have been a great fan of JF Penn for quite a while now and she never ceases to amaze me. She has collaborated with J Thorn before (The Gods Have Risen is a must read.) and I have read his books also.
There was an ancient Peruvian sacrificial skull in a library in Chicago. It was kept in the open in a locked windowed box. Few knew that it had magical properties (evil, of course) save for one of our prime characters, Blake Daniels. Another prime character, Sebastian, appears on the scene with the same intent, but for different reasons: to steal the skull. Sebastian is successful, but drops a clue and Blake follows to try to get the skull.
Segue to a non-stop train leaving for New Orleans, with its legends of the occult. Enter the rest of our prime characters, Sonya, Hank and Corey who are members of Orion's Order, and Aiko and het daughter, Caroline. Not to mention the skull starts oozing and smelling.
Blake manages to steal the skull from Sebastian and opens a portal to try to bring his dead son, Daniel, back to life. Daniel tells Blake off and then a demon appears and exits the portal. Then the fun really begins as the demon goes through the train and more demons enter through the portal to feast on the inhabitants of the train.
I look forward more of this series. It is full of exciting action and I picked up a few more words. I usually get them from JF Penn, but this time I am not sure: trepanning, trephining peuchen. kharisiri,and colo-colo.. Look for them in the book or just look them up.

With four authors and written on a train ride I got this book mostly out of curiosity. I was familiar with JF Penn and J thorn but now the other two authors Zach Bohannon and Lindsey Buroker. I was not disappointed. Loved this book. I have since read other books by these other two others. An ancient Peruvian sacrificial skull in a library in Chicago is the beginning of this evil gripping story. Then skull, demons, dead sons and the story is up and running.

Luckily, a family of Demon Hunters from J. Thorn's series is onboard, and must stop the train before it reached its destination. For most of the book, it reads as though the various authors were trying to outdo each other with violence and gore. highly recommended

The backstory of the authors creating this story on a train trip from Chicago to New Orleans was fascinating to me, and it was fun to read the results of their collaboration. Some of the characters are part of the ongoing series, and I'm awfully curious where their road goes.

I'm always a little dubious when I see a lot of names on the cover of a book. Oftentimes I find writers can get carried away in the flow of creation that the end product is not as strong as I'd come to expect from them. But there is nothing to worry about with this book.

The combined efforts of Thorn, Bohannon, Buroker, and Penn are sharp, fluid, and explosively wild. For a story that spends 90% of its time on one train (incidentally, the same train the writers created it on), there is a surprising amount of variety of everything in the text. The story is non-stop action, filled with intrigue, wonder, and - spoiler alert - the dark demons from an open portal to hell.

This is certainly one to add to your collection. How often do you get the creative talents of four professionals on one text, with all four of them living to tell the tale?

As a long-time fan of JF Penn's supernatural thrillers, I was fascinated to see how a 4-way collaboration involving one of her characters would work. Thankfully it works incredibly well indeed - so well, in fact, that I actually read this book in one sitting, ironically while on a train. The book follows the events of essentially one evening, after a portal is opened to a world populated by demons; demons who have their greedy eyes fixed on humanity. Penn's segments were as action-packed as I've come to expect, but I also found myself hugely enjoying the sections by the other authors as well. It's fast-paced, full of great characters, and a whole heap of thrilling fun!

As someone who doesn't normally read this genre I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Fast paced with a great balance of darkness, demons and plot to keep you turning the page. The thing I loved most about this book was the different points of view. Having four authors write this book meant the characters were 100% on point and because they were so differentiated it made it really easy to head swap as the chapters progressed. I loved the character development of each of the characters and I loved the ending. I hope these guys get back together to write another one :)

I was not disappointed this was a fast paced book,with a great mix of original characters and new. There was a few twists but still a great hunters book. Hopefully they will keep the new characters going in future.
It got me in the end as I thought the Russian would be the one to save hank and open up everything. Great book
