About the author

Lyman Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, on May 15, 1856. Over the course of his life, Baum raised fancy poultry, sold fireworks, managed an opera house, opened a department store, and an edited a newspaper before finally turning to writing. In 1900, he published his best known book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Eventually he wrote fifty-five novels, including thirteen Oz books, plus four “lost” novels, eighty-three short stories, more than two hundred poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings. Baum died on May 6, 1919. He is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in Glendale, California.

A lot of people will almost certainly take offence at the final story which involves some stereotypes of the villain who is Chinese, but he is a villain and the other Chinese in the story are not portrayed the same way.
There is also some offensive stereotyping in the Laughing Hippopotamus, the story of a fun loving young hippo hunted by an African bully.
These are not Baum's best stories by any means and though there are some fun moments to be had, it's definitely not in my favorites when it comes to his fairy tales.
This is NOT the complete edition and is missing three stories and all of the illustrations.
The twelve stories included are:
"The Box of Robbers."
"The Glass Dog."
"The Queen of Quok."
"The Girl Who Owned a Bear."
"The Enchanted Types."
"The Laughing Hippopotamus."
"The Magic Bon Bons."
"The Capture of Father Time."
"The Wonderful Pump."
"The Dummy That Lived."
"The King of the Polar Bears."
"The Mandarin and the Butterfly.".
The missing stories which were added in a later edition are:
"The Strange Adventures of an Egg."
"The Ryl."
"The Witchcraft of Mary-Marie."
The stories are a delight. They are filled with morals, but never fail to entertain.
Some mix the whimsy with touching elements, such as "The Dummy That Lived" (about a mannequin that comes to life) and "The Wonderful Pump", about a poor family whose pump produces gold. A few are outright farce, such as "The Box of Robbers" (about a girl who finds a trunk with three Italian bandits similar to Aladdin's Lamp) and "The Magic Bon Bons," a story that still amuses over a century later. Interestingly, in spite of the book's title, "The Laughung Hippopotamus" and "The Mandarin and the Butterfly" take place in Africa and China, respectively.
Great to read for the kiddles or by yourself on your porch or in front of a fireplace in a rocking chair.
These stories feature good humor, and are often tongue-in-cheek. While perfectly appropriate for children, they were clearly written with adults in mind, and can be enjoyed by such. Highlights here include "The Glass Dog" and "The Queen of Quok."
They aren't all classics, but everything is short and moves briskly. There is also some mild racism in a couple of places, but nothing worth starting a bonfire over.
Overall, American Fairy Tales is a charming, clever, entertaining work.
By L. Frank Baum
E-Book design by Teddi Black
I bought this book for its cover! Other editions look like textbooks, this one has real appeal. And it called the book to my attention.
I confess, I didn’t grow up reading the Oz books. I had no idea Baum wrote fables—because as with Grimm’s Fairy Tales, there are few fairies—but Baum does have one or two. Every tale has a moral—some of them vaguely subversive.
Unlike Grimm’s, some of these fairy tales do contain fairies. Beings not really based on humans. Beings with supernatural powers, and no conventional morality to get in the way of using those powers.
The illustrations added for this e-book edition are spot-on, entertaining all on their own.
Baum wrote a dozen short, fable-like fantasies for children that have a bright, modern (well, 1901) voice to them. They should please adults as well because of the tongue-in-cheek humor and irony. Baum's voice and personality come through clearly enough to give him a presence as the story teller, which is a nice plus when reading the stories to someone else.
Be sure to get a version with all of the original illustrations and page border graphics.
