My husband wanted me to read this book for years. I never picked it up. After seeing a preview for the upcoming series, I decided I'd better read it.
I was not disappointed or led astray with my husbands high praise of this book.
As a lover of mythology my whole life, this book was right up my alley and then some.
I loved the characters. I was totally snowed by the plot.
This, for me, was one of those books I felt intense sadness when I reached the final page.
I loved the storytelling vibe of the writing.
Great read. Can't wait for the show and supposedly there's a book two in the works? Can't wait!

Interesting Read

I normally read sci-fi, but picked this up as the TV ads for the series looked interesting.

It takes a bit of work to get the flow and acclimate to the style, but it's a good read.

Keep it for a weekend when you don't want to do anything and it will keep you entertained.

I haven't seen the TV series and, frankly, don't think it could do justice to the novel.

It took me awhile to get through this book. I started it became engrossed in it then shelved it for a bit. But I kept coming back to it and eventually couldn't put it down. There were parts I reread and highlighted, and actually read aloud to myself. I don't think I know how to properly review American Gods. It is one of those books I know I will read again and take something different from it each time.

A mythical road trip through a Faulkner-like America

I didn't read the book when it came out so I just ended up buying the 10th anniversary edition. The story is great. I read it slowly, savoring each subplot (and there are lots of them). I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan and besides Neverwhere, this is now my other favorite book of his. This edition also contains tons of extra stuff, an interview with him, an additional foreword by him, an excerpt to another Neil Gaiman novel, and a book club discussion section. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

Gaiman said in his preface of this edition that he set out to write a book that was odd, long, and meandering and that he did. He was certainly correct in that assessment. I'm not sure that I understand why it won the Hugo and Nebula awards, as there is nothing in it that is science fiction in my understanding. However, that being said, it is an excellent story, told excellently. Personally, I don't assign it the significance that many have, but it s well worth reading.

Absent character development and disjointed plot

The only reason this earned 2 stars instead of 1 is because of its eloquent language and writing style. However, I was totally unable to finish this book. The character development is completely nonexistent. The main character is exposed to all sorts of (obviously) unrealistic events and he just shrugs his shoulders and moves on. It wasn't suiting to go on such a journey with a group of characters that were practically strangers.
Overall, I would NOT recommend this book. I would however, recommend other works but this author, for he has written some great works.

The whole story

The first time I read this was on its first release and was left feeling frustrated. There were, in my mind, missing pieces. Not enough detail on things that felt important to me, if not to the story. Upon reading this edition, with the missing parts finally in place, it is every bit the story I needed it to be. Excellent tale expertly told.

Storytelling at its best....

Neil Gaiman is a master storyteller with an imagination to match the universe of legends, myths, and characters he draws from to weave this tale of a land unkind to the gods of the Old World. If you are not versed in world mythology, this book presents the opportunity to go exploring and researching the tales of ancient cultures. This is Harry Potter for grown ups - more graphic language, more violence, more complex, but highly imaginative and a satisfying read. The only thing better than reading it is listening to Mr. Gaiman himself lift the characters off the page.
