Editorial Reviews

On American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper's 6th album and third on Sub Pop, the band let their loves and influences hard guitar rock, country picking and pawn-shop Casio aplomb hang out for all to see. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Earley says American Goldwing will make you want to shotgun a beer in the shower while listening to the Stones or Joe Walsh (well, or Blitzen Trapper) and we are not inclined to argue.

I would actually rate this album at 4 stars but I wanted to counter some of the negativity. Here's the thing, if you are expecting an album to redefine music, if you insist that every new album released must blow your mind with something "innovative" or "progressive" this probably isn't your album. On the other hand, if you are a person who trys to find the good in an album, if you like driving down a road going nowhere just so you can roll the windows down, turn up the volume and leave the rest of the whining complaining world behind, this album should help put a smile on your face.

Dear Music Appreciator,

Here are some reasons to buy this new album by Blitzen Trapper:

- You are laid back enough to appreciate good rockin' music for what it is rather than pick it apart and critically compare it to a bunch of other music and/ or bands and/or genres that you think are somehow relative to the quality of Blitzen Trapper as a band and American Goldwing as a record.

- You are sensible enough to know that for a band to not fit neatly into a box could actually be a good thing.

- You are wise enough to know that a band's failure to fit into a box or to capitalize on a signature sound could actually be what makes it great and that sometimes the lack of a certain defining quality in a band is a defining quality in and of itself and that that could actually be close to what Dylan had in mind when he called himself a "musical expeditionary." Blitzen Trapper is a band of musical expeditionaries.

- You are educated enough to know that, as in the movies, if a band produces a record that seems to play by a certain set of rules associated with a certain genre that the record can still be a work of art if the band plays by those rules well. The Hollywood studio system produced paint-by-the-numbers genre films for years that were later recognized as true works of art and masterpieces of their particular genre. Is AMERICAN GOLDWING a true work of art or a masterpiece of it's genre? Too soon to tell but I definitely can't say that it's not...

- You are cool enough to know that when a band reminds you of Zeppelin and Dylan and The Band and Big Star on the same record that it's not a troublesome thing - it's an effing awesome thing.

I wanted to post something to counter the only other review (as of 9/13) that bashes Blitzen Trapper (and "Goldwing") for "suffering from a complex" that involves neither a signature sound nor a an emotional appeal. I'm not sure how anyone could make that statement after listening to "Furr," and while Goldwing isn't Furr (in my personal top 10 from '08), I think it's a better (funner?) album than "Destroyer Of The Void." Goldwing brings back the energy and drive that make Blitzen Trapper such a joy to hear. Maybe some Pitchfork-types want to bash Goldwing, but I don't think you can listen to Goldwing from front to back without wanting to do some air guitar or ride around town with the windows down. It's a shame this album wasn't out three months ago, as it is nearly a perfect summer record. Don't put it on your couch and try to diagnose it with a complex. Instead, buy and enjoy.

I have been listening to this album pretty non-stop for about a week now and am still discovering brilliant little moments in it. Don't knock this album for being a retread because all rock music is basically a retread these days. All rock bands have been mutts for a long time now. The supposedly groundbreaking music you are listening to is a retread of a retread of a retread. You probably just haven't listened to the entire catalogue of pop music from 1950 onwards to realize that yet. Pitchfork didn't like this album because they can't handle anything that actually rocks. That is just a given. You can't set forth a 1500 word snoozefest that compares this album to Eno, Brian Wilson and Hall and Oates and sucks any joy left in rock and roll straight back outta it when you write about this album. It all comes down to the songs and the songs on this album are damn fine. This is music meant to compete with the likes of Steve Miller, Led Zep, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Bands and individuals that write songs that impact not only current trendsetters, but entire generations. Long after love affairs with bands like Grizzly Bear and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah fade to black (usually their sophomore album by the way) the music of Blitzen Trapper will still be going strong. The title track of this album just might be the best song of 2011 by the way.

I loved "Furr," but "Goldwing" is an even more delicious confection. The songs are gorgeously written and performed, linking classic rock, roots and power pop with effortless elan. These songs, particularly the title track, "Might Find It Cheap," "Astronaut," "Street Fighting Sun" and "Girl in a Coat," make me feel good in that deep-down place that only my all-time favorites can. It's as though this band's voices, guitars, pianos and drums are wired directly to my pleasure center. Sometimes it suggests an unholy blend of, say, The Band and Cheap Trick, but mostly "Goldwing" sounds a whole lot like Blitzen Trapper -- and it's pretty much all I want to hear right now.
