Purchase options and add-ons

In place of the long-delayed, heavy and expensive F-35, the U. S. military has a better alternative, the Saab Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft. The F-35 is the world's largest weapons program, but it has attracted little in-depth analysis to date, apart from the Pentagon Director of Operational Test and Evaluation reports which, year after year, point out the aircraft's show-stopping failings and shortcomings. Becuase we are all paying for it, American Gripen was written to provide the buying public a complete understanding of the F-35's whys and wherefores in the context of military aviation. It is a call to action. We will all be much safer when the F-35 program is dead an buried.

I bought this book to learn about what considerations are of high priority when comparing modern fighter/strike aircraft. It met my expectations and more. It is an excellent read.

Okay... So, the book clearly isn't a love letter to the F-35. However, I haven't found in my own research that was untruthful about anything. The main objective of the book seems to be to highlight the danger of China and how the f-35 is unsuited to the type of war that would be required against China. Here the book makes good points.
The author clearly isn't drinking the Kool-Aid about american weapons systems being better than anything else, ever, all the time.
The author qoutes actual battlefield results of weapons systems such as air to air missiles. The actual results are not what the public is led to believe. As a combat veteran myself, I can attest to this being true, the actual battlefield is not the clean lab where everything works. Furthermore, war has its own reality and weapons systems are not and cannot always be used as the manufacturer intended. For example, infantry sometimes used smart anti weapons on mud huts and such, unit the U.S. army put a stop to the by issuing Carl Gustav's

This leads me to believe that many of the problems highlighted in this book, will be actual problems in combat situations with opponents who are capable of with more than just small arms.

This book wasn't exactly what I was looking for. However, it was informative, it was interesting, and I'm glad a read it. Could the author have stayed on track better? Yes. There are certainly tangents, and perceived Chinese aggression seems to play a big part in the authors thinking.

Like much of history, a national defense needs to be carefully thought out, with all potential adversary's taken into account. So after reading this am I convinced that U.S. national defense could get a get a jet better suited to addressing future missions, for the same or less money? Yes. Did this author convince me? No. I've read other books on the subject, and I have a military back ground. But the book is worth reading.

excellent overview of a disaster in the making, leaving a trail of bad decisions in its wake over a twenty year period. The USA and its main allies have signed up for a front line fighter that is wickedly expensive at $ 270 million each, is ten years late in production, and still not combat -ready, is comprehensively outclassed in battle by the modern jet fighters of other nations, and in the event an F 35 pilot is forced to bail out of a crippled F 35 he is likely to break his neck as American testing clearly shows the pilot"s helmet catches on the back of the cockpit as the pilot ejects. The F 35 is promoted by many Governments and their militaries as the main strike fighter for the next 40 years, when the opposition aircraft are clearly superior in performance and weaponry.

Somebody finally sat down and tallied all the deficiencies of the Pentagon’s largest weapons program. It isn’t like F35 detractors wanted the airplane to fail, quite the opposite in fact. But years of relentless and inaccurate cheerleading by Lockheed, and blatant downright lying by the Armed Forces needs to be contrasted with forthright and accurate opposition before this thing fails in combat.

The book provided some interesting thoughts about what the US Air Force has done and the possible potential of the Gripen unfortunately it repeats itself too much. It’s an easy quick read. The fact base (author?) could be more substantiated and added details would be a plus.

Stealth, as practiced by the F-22 and F-35, is optimised on radar in the X band from 7.0 to 11.2 gigahertz. Detection in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum has improved a lot over the last twenty years. Chief of these is infrared search and track (IRST) which enables an F-35 to be detected from its engine exhaust from over 60 miles away. The latest iteration of the Su-27 Flanker family, the Su-35, has IRST and L band radar on its wings. L band and lower frequency radars can see stealthy aircraft over 100 miles away. So an Su-35 can see a F-35 well before the F-35 can detect it. Stealth, as an end in itself, has outlived its usefulness, and maintaining that RAM coating is killing the budget for no good reason.

The first F-35 to come off the assembly line was in 2006. That was ten years ago and, even though the F-35 is still years of from going into full production, it needs a $2.6 billion modernisation to upgrade its combat power. The solution to the F-35 nightmare first flew in 2008. This is the Gripen E of Saab in Sweden, updated from the original Gripen A of 1988. It is a delta wing with canards, likely the ideal planform for a single-engine air-superiority fighter. As an air-superiority fighter, it is almost as good as the F-22 – good to the extent that the work of 10 F-22s could be done by 15 Gripen Es. Those 10 F-22s would be equivalent to 40 F-35s. Importantly, the Gripen-E is half the capital cost of the F-35, with an operating cost per hour that is one sixth that of the F-35. The Gripen E has a high proportion of U.S.-made parts, including the engine, which is the one used by the F-18 Super Hornet.America's air superiority is currently provided by a handful of F-22s, which are likely to be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of late-model Chinese fighter aircraft. Once the F-22s are shot down, the rest of the Air Force will be defenseless, even if the F-35 were in service and worked as designed.

This book is wonderful in terms of technical aspects of modern fights related to the war. Strategy is very important in designing the war equipment but must be in economic form , too much cost injected in F-35 is nothing like bone which has been stuck in US Airforce either they handle the difficulties n overcome with passage of time or just find the replacement . Good book- anyone who is willing to read or know about a fighter aircraft how they fly ,cross section ,what are problems of F-35 which is facing right now, how missiles works many more.....

In my opinion, this is a brilliant, convincing and well written book but I should add I am neither a fight pilot nor an aerodynamicist. The scope of the book is maybe a bit wide (or you might think David is wandering off topic) but what I think the author is trying to point out is that you can't separate design from mission and objectives. His analysis of the F35 is as clear as it is devastating. An aircraft that attempts to do everything can only be late, mediocre and expensive. The early design choices ( "baked in the cake") as the author calls it, preclude any redemption further down the development path.

3.0 out of 5 stars Información técnica útil
Reviewed in Spain on July 4, 2017
