The excitement of cooking from the American Heritage Cookbook has never ended for me. The recipes are truly delicious and the historical blurbs give one food for thought. Although the recipes are certainly not according to present day nutritional guidelines the palate will be more than satisfied.

My family has special memories of dinners and family gatherings in which a number of the historical American recipes in this book were featured and became such favorites. When our son was in college on the Oregon Coast, we brought pots of the delicious recipes that he shared with dorm mates. I lost my copy of the book and only recently was so blessed to locate a copy in excellent condition.

An interesting history of the diet of the Americas. It is great for hands on teaching of the combinations of peoples that settled this area and their contributions to todays diets. From Mush for the week and shoe fly pie as a celebration to todays mixed meals.

This book is fabulous. It combines the history of cooking, in America, with a cookbook that details many of the recipes it highlights. These are not modern recipes; these are historical recipes. They don't contain ready-made add-ins, nor have they been tinkered with, to allow them to be cooked in the microwave, but if you are interested in cooking, (for reasons other than sustenance), this book is VERY interesting and VERY rewarding. I highly recommend it. Even if you never make one of the recipes, the book is fascinating all by itself. You will learn SO many things that you never would have known, otherwise... from how common measures came about, to how a meal was ordered in an inn as travelers moved along the roads of a bygone era. Just fascinating.

The subtitles to this interesting book:
-by the Editors of American Heritage
-500 Easy-to-Make Recipes Complete and Up-to-Date
-40 Historic Menus

At first, the selection of recipes seemed to be rather quirky. There are many recipes of significant historical interest, but surprising few that seemed to be good enough to try out in my kitchen. In the end, I was rather underwhelmed by this book and do not recommend it, despite the historical importance of the recipes contained therein.

The selection of recipes in this book is puzzling, until you get to the last chapter. Here, you will find many menus for historically important meals, feasts, and events. A majority of the individual dishes for each menu has an asterisk "*" next to it; there is no editorial explanation, but these indicate that there is a matching recipe in the book. So, it seems that the selection of recipes were designed to enable you to recreate these very interesting and historical menus.

The forward indicates that the recipes were "tested by trained home economists", but I question the efficacy of this effort. Most recipes consist of a few, terse sentences. Many involved recipes needing good kitchen skills are casually tossed off. Most recipes require the touch of an experienced cook to correctly execute them.

This was a gift for my niece and she was so excited when she got it. It's an excellent resource for recipes and includes a history behind the recipes. She loves it.
