American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus First Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
A revelatory account of the new culture of sex that has come to dominate the American college experience.
The hookup is now part of college life. Yet the drunken encounter we always hear about tells only a fraction of the story. Rising above misinformation and moralizing, Lisa Wade offers the definitive account of this new sexual culture and demonstrates that the truth is both more heartening and more harrowing than we thought.
Offering invaluable insights for parents, educators, and students, Wade situates hookup culture within the history of sexuality, the evolution of higher education, and the unfinished feminist revolution. Using new research, she maps out a punishing emotional landscape marked by unequal pleasures, competition for status, and sexual violence. She discovers that the most privileged students tend to like hookup culture the most, and she considers its effects on racial and sexual minorities, students who “opt out,” and those who participate ambivalently.
Accessible and open-minded, compassionate and brutally honest, American Hookup explains where we are and how we got here, asking not “How do we go back?” but “Where do we go from here?”

- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2017What a great book. I’m not a college student or a parent, or any kind of campus employee – you wouldn’t think the topic would have relevance for me! But I read it just for fun, and it turns out to be so relatable no matter what your age or situation. It absolutely made me see things differently as I went about my life at work, bars, or any social situation. I also prefer to read for entertainment rather than education – you have to sneak in the education part – and this book does a great job of that. It is so well written, with humor and captivating stories, tying things together throughout different chapters; and yet it’s sharing really important ideas at the same time. Highly recommend – for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017American Hookup by Lisa Wade is a great read and an important academic work of social science. Lisa Wade combines thorough meta analysis with quantitative and qualitative research techniques to help us understand not just the scope and nature of hookup culture, but also the human impact and why we should care. Her writing beautifully weaves history, sociology, race, gender and personal narratives.
I'd certainly recommend this for anyone in college or about to enter college and for parents of college bound students. As a 43 year old man, I reflected back on my own experience at college and beyond and I gained important and surprising personal insights while reading this book. American Hookup is highly relevant for anyone who has participated in the American dating scene.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2021Overall, I thought this book was a good read. I believe that this would be especially educating to someone who doesn't know anything about the college hookup culture or that has a child who was about to enter the college scene. Personally, I chose this book because my daughter is just a few years from entering college and I was interested to know more on the topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2017This text is an excellent examination of sexual culture on college campuses. Wade's voice is clear, accessible, and still maintains its basis in research-based knowledge. Wade manages to point out the downsides of hookup culture while still avoiding a tone of panic. Moreover, she acknowledges the "fun" of college life and sexual freedom (or at least, the potential for fun) that comes with it. The voices of students are always at the forefront of this text, as Wade uses their own language and stories to describe hookup culture and its relationship to students' lives. I would unequivocally recommend this as a text for First Year Seminar or similar classes, and similarly recommend it to anyone about to attend college.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018Absolutely one of my favorite books I've been assigned for a class. I even gave it to my boyfriend and let him read it. I may even read this again although my copy is covered in notes by now! Wade lays out the intricacies of how toxic hookup culture is in modern society, adding that many individuals, mainly those in a university setting, feel pressured to fit in and will do whatever it takes to do so. The focus on minority groups is such an interesting read, and even the sections on the male perspective and the perspective of the perpetrator of hookup culture.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2022This book is a brilliant social study couched in novice-friendly prose and a non-judge mental reporting style. It is an absolute pleasure to read. One comes away with valuable insight and knowledge without the dreary, dry presentation so common in educational materials.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2022The book I chose to read for the book review was American Hookup : The New Culture Of Sex on Campus. Essentially the book is made up of a sociological study Dr. Lisa Wade conducted with students in a sociology course. The students were from two different universities. One was at a secular university and the other a religious university. Dr. Wade explores how hookup culture and no hookups themselves are the cause of issues with depression and anxiety in students and not the hookups themselves. The book discusses several different stories and how students portray the hookup culture. Dr. Wade introduces sets of rules for hooking up and also introduces rules in relation to grinding and how this is an important part of the hookup process. Unfortunately, the study is mostly limited to white middle class students and leaves a lot to be desired regarding other sexualities, genders, and races.
Personally, I would not recommend the book to read it just for the enjoyment of reading or to gain any real information regarding hookup culture as the author admits to dramatizing parts of the stories which does not seem like something one would do with proper research. However, I do think this book would be a great read for research class to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the research itself.

I have not read the book yet, but the product it self is perfect.
