Editorial Reviews

American Hustle - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, premieres a new recording from Jeff Lynne (E.L.O.) called, "Stream of Stars," in addition to several poignant 70s anthems such as "Live And Let Die" by Wings, "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John, and many more.

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell's previous films (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, etc.), American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.

Music: 4.5 stars; sequencing: 3.5 stars; economic value: 4 stars.

I just saw "American Hustle" in the theatre, and made a mental note to myself to check out the soundtrack, as the music plays prominently in the movie.

"American Hustle: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (15 tracks; 55 min.) is chock-full of excellent songs from the 1970s, some of them very well known (and deemed "classics") and others not so much (and deemed "forgotten nuggets"). First things first: regrettably (and for reasons totally unclear to me), the soundtrack does NOT brings the songs in the same order as they are played in the movie. Instead, the sequencing seems pretty much entirely random. The soundtrack starts here with Duke Ellington's "Jeep's Blues" (Ellington is a common interest of two of the movie's main characters), then we dive straight into Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". One of the most hilarious scenes in "American Hustle" comes late in the movie when the character played by Jennifer Lawrence, a 'dumb blond' housewife called Rosalyn, cleans house and sings/dances to Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die, now playing upfront on the soundtrack. Another very memorable scene comes when Bradley Cooper's Richie and Amy Adam's Sydney characters go out on the town and end up dancing at a club to Donna Summers' classic I Feel Love, after which the movie shifts to another scene where other characters are singing/dancing along to Tom Jones' Delilah. Sheer delight! America's Horse With No Name, one of the first songs in the movie, is buried deep on here.

Where in the heck is Steely Dan's Dirty Work? Why was that left off the sound track cd? It was 1 of the first songs in the movie, and describes the American Hustle so well!

There are actually LOTS of songs missing - not just "Dirty Work" as others have mentioned. "Does Anybody Really Know What Time it is", "Evil Ways", "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", etc. (See below link.) If I'm going to buy a soundtrack, it needs to be more thorough - and in sequence - so you can easily relive the movie as you're listening. Loved the movie though, and the music was a big, big part of that.

Good collection of songs from the 70's, however, not period true for 1978. Regrettably, one of the best songs in the motion picture, Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" is left off the soundtrack album.

Like many other posts I was very disappointed that the Zep and Steely songs were omitted from the soundtrack but overall, this is a decent, enjoyable album/collection of songs and an even better, shall we say fantastic movie. Unlike other posts, I not only noticed the music was not from 1978 (Jeeps Blues is the giveaway - spoiler alert) but realized that it didn't matter to the movie - Perhaps it was simply the music on the radio at the time. If you don't already have these songs, this album makes a great background music/party album IMHO

Nice, and love the Jeff Lynne stuff, but soundtracks are usually incomplete, as is this CD, with only 14 of the listed 30 songs at end of movie music credits (ie: "Evil Ways" is in movie credits - I suppose since it was in deleted scenes; and I have no idea what the last song is on CD "Irving Montage").

This review is for the LP (record / Vinyl) version of this, which is apparently not missing as much as the CD release. Of note, the amazon 'autorip' mp3 downloads that are included with the LP purchase are apparently only what is on the CD

The sound quality of the LP is certainly acceptable, and better. I don't have the most critical ear, but it sounds really good to me. Especially considering it's standard weight colored vinyl (red for the first LP, blue for the second), it performs well with most of the subtleties etc coming through clearly, i.e. the whisper in 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' is subtle but clear.

If you like this genre you'll love this LP.

I loved the movie and ordered this on the way out of the theater. I just really like the music from this time period. I guess it is the music of my youth, but I'm appreciating it in a new way as a 40-something. Great arrangements.
