About the Author
Dr. Francis Bandettini: For psychiatry thriller, a psychiatrist author is a must. Dr. Bandettini is a private practice psychiatrist and co-author of American Jackal. He graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in molecular biology. He earned his medical degree at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Bandettini completed his psychiatry residency at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, where he subsequently joined the faculty as an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry. He is a retired Captain from the United States Army and South Dakota National Guard. He lives with his wife in the greater Sioux Falls area. What is unique about Dr. Bandettini? Just about everything. On most days, Dr. Bandettini rides his bicycle to work--even in the harsh South Dakota winters with his titanium-studded tires. He believes, according to recent research and his own experience, a day without biking is a day without peak enjoyment and functioning in his work. He has therefore a complete shower and kitchen in his office. He usually bikes home late at night with his wife--if his "darn paperwork is done." His wife, Naomi, accompanies him only "if more than 20 degrees F/-7 degrees C. " So she says! He usually writes from his home or office in the mornings, and collaborates with his co-author at various times in early morning and late night. He loves seeing patients and always tries to practice what he preaches in the most eclectic way--because each of us are so different! Matt Nilsen: After working in hospitals and clinics for more than a decade, Matt was ready to couple his creativity with stories from his healthcare career. From the world of emergency rooms, orthopedic clinics, private medical practices, dialysis units, administrative suites, hospital pharmacies, intensive care units, and psychiatry floors, Matt Nilsen has witnessed thousands of patients and their challenges. He's had his fair of surgeries and spent a few dozen days as a patient in the hospital himself. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife and four kids, but spends ample time in South Dakota. He completed an undergraduate degree in marketing at the University of Utah, and earned a Master of Health Administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia. His former employers include the Barnabas Healthcare System, Intermountain Healthcare, and the 3M Corporation.

The main character, Dr. Troy Stoker is a psychiatrist who is former military, the kind of guy who does the right thing, no matter what the cost, even if it means taking on a General head on and the risk of being tossed into the brig with a dishonorable discharge.
I liked this character from the start. As the book progresses we go from 1992 to present day and into a mystery that in volves the town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Ann Higgins is the wife of the Lieutenant Governor-elect, Kent Higgins. While showing a house to some perspective clients She accidently stumbles upon an oddly designed basement, that causes her to investigate further, she discovers evil has come to her quiet town, soon Ann becomes a target and realizes murder is not too high a risk for the shadowy figure who needs her silenced once and for all.
This is a very involved and detailed novel. Each character only serves to add another layer to mystery to what can only be called an epic tale. If you love brilliant writing, 3 dimensional characters and sitting on the edge of your seat? Then this is the book for you! I will never look at coyotes the same…ever again!
The plot was solid and the supporting characters were interesting and complemented Stoker. The action was unrelenting and just when you thought things couldn't get more exciting, it did.
Fans of Vince Flynn and Harlan Coben will definitely become addicted to this series and readers new to the thriller genre will likewise enjoy this. Pick up a copy today and start reading this! You'll love it too!
The story mostly takes place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Not exactly a place that one would connect with drug cartels and government corruption, but it definitely works. The juxtaposition of the clean cut Midwest with the lurid drug world emphasizes the grittiness in the plot.
The writing is so tight that I was sucked right in from the first page. Honestly, there were moments in the story when I was genuinely on the edge of my seat. I read it in a day because I couldn’t put the book down because I just had to know what was going to happen next. Would they get caught? How is the character connected? Who is this commander guy?!?
The characters are well written, too. You can really get a feel for their motivations, their emotions, and their placement in the world of good versus bad that the authors created. Don’t get me wrong. The characters are not simpletons. They are complex and have their own demons and history to handle. At first I wasn’t sure if I could keep track of all the characters, but in the end it all came together nicely. This is a sure sign of good writing.
What I liked most about this book is the location it starts out at giving the listener a solid base from which the rest of the story became believable. I felt like I was right there with them as a sidekick during all the twists and turns. Several of the settings in which events happened are towns I have personally lived in and are spot on.
The book didn't stop there with local area in which the characters lived. It took you on a ride to the States Capital and all the way to Washington DC.
If you like to read or listen to a book that has Thriller, Suspense, Politics, Psychiatry, the underground illegal drug world and who are many times at the helm along with Identity Theft, this book is for you!
I look forward to listening to the sequel!
