Returning home from deployment after being shot twice, Army sniper Emerson Hollis is facing a new life without doing the one thing she loves, being a soldier. When she meets Gentry, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and friend of one of her best friends, Knox, she quickly develops feelings that she has never felt before. She’s never opened up completely to anyone, including her closest friends, holding
Gentry Rice has always been a bit of a manwhore, but when he meets the tough-as-nails Emerson he immediately senses things with her could be different. Determined to make her his, he vows to not have sex with her until she admits they should be together. When each of their stubborn resolves finally cracks, they decide to make a go of it. But once they find out the secrets that they are each keeping, will it all be for naught? Can their burgeoning relationship survive the lack of trust they have in each other?
When Emerson manages to relearn her skills and gets a job with the local SWAT team, the couple also must confront the fears that are a part of the job, the fears that any day could be their last, given the danger of their jobs. Making matters worse is the way in which Emerson’s best friend Ariana has dealt with the death of her husband, Brett. Emerson sees first hand how the death of a loved one in the line of duty can be soul crushing, a chance she’s just not ready to take right now.
As a military spouse I usually steer clear of military romances. All too often there are facts unchecked and the sometimes hard, gritty reality of military life is glossed over for the sake of romanticism. Kiden has done her homework and did an excellent job of telling it like it is. Deployments are hard, not only for the service member but their families, and just because they have returned doesn’t mean they come back as the same person they were when they left. Kiden explored that reality from several angles; the service member, the spouse, family, and the soldiers whose lives you were an integral part of during the deployment. Exploring all of these relationships helps to expose Emerson’s strength, as well her vulnerabilities.
This is the second book in the series, however the first book, Fall Out, is a prequel novella. It isn’t necessary to have read it in order to enjoy American Made, however it does give a lot more insight into the strength and depth of the relationships of the group of friends. American Made is told in a dual POV from both Emerson and Gentry’s points of view, providing excellent balance in the emotionally charged subject matter of the series. The book is sweet, sexy, and at times emotionally raw.
My only complaint with the book is the ending. It was abrupt; perhaps way too abrupt considering how much I enjoyed the book (I did stay up until 0230 to finish reading, after all). I would have loved to have been given just a little bit more of a glimpse into Emerson and Gentry’s life together, but I am holding out hope that they will be making appearances in subsequent books. Kiden has created characters that are so easy to care for and a storyline that immediately grabs your interest. I can’t wait to find out whose story we get next!
Emerson Hollis has always set out to accomplish what people said she couldn't do, and she succeeds. She's a protector naturally, so when she becomes a sniper in the military, it's not for glory. After being shot, she finds herself going home with no idea what she's going to do next with her life. Rescue Swimmer Gentry Rice lives for his job. Plus, he's a manwhore. When he sets eyes on Emerson for the first time, he feels an instant connection. She's everything he never knew he wanted or thought he needed. The big problem facing him is Emerson doesn't do relationships nor let anyone close to her. Will Emerson and Gentry figure out they're perfect for each other?
I absolutely LOVE this new series. First of all, the character development is perfect, and they're extremely relatable. The secondary characters are just as great. Kathryn Kiden's writing style is brilliant in how flawlessly she captivates the reader from the very first chapter, and holds our attention long after the last page. She's very talented in ripping my heart out, setting it on fire, and then stomping on it to get the flames out. You may need motion sickness pills as you experience the emotional roller coaster ride of your life. AND SCORCHING HOT love scenes will melt your drawers. No matter how many cuss words I yell while reading it, I can't put this story down to save my life because her writing is kindle crack. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY and even HIGHLY RECOMMEND American Made and Kathryn Kiden!
I got to read the prequel to kind of introduce everyone and also this one. I loved this book. Getting to see everyone that was involved in the life and seeing the bad ass Emerson Hollis who had been working in a mans world for so long. She didn't give an eff. And I loved that about her.
People were always going to mess with her but the thing is, even though she has all these guys protecting her she was able to handle herself. She didn't want anything in terms of a relationship. In walks Gentry, who isn't going to let her just walk away. He makes her feel things she had never felt before. Opens up his world. With her new job. New boyfriend and her old wounds coming to head it is a lot for Emerson to handle.
I hope this is going to be more from this series because let me tell you these characters are absolutely beautiful. Emerson is such a beautiful heroine and I love the vagina squad. Can't wait to watch out for more from this author.
