Returning home from deployment after being shot twice, Army sniper Emerson Hollis is facing a new life without doing the one thing she loves, being a soldier. When she meets Gentry, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and friend of one of her best friends, Knox, she quickly develops feelings that she has never felt before. She’s never opened up completely to anyone, including her closest friends, holding
Gentry Rice has always been a bit of a manwhore, but when he meets the tough-as-nails Emerson he immediately senses things with her could be different. Determined to make her his, he vows to not have sex with her until she admits they should be together. When each of their stubborn resolves finally cracks, they decide to make a go of it. But once they find out the secrets that they are each keeping, will it all be for naught? Can their burgeoning relationship survive the lack of trust they have in each other?
When Emerson manages to relearn her skills and gets a job with the local SWAT team, the couple also must confront the fears that are a part of the job, the fears that any day could be their last, given the danger of their jobs. Making matters worse is the way in which Emerson’s best friend Ariana has dealt with the death of her husband, Brett. Emerson sees first hand how the death of a loved one in the line of duty can be soul crushing, a chance she’s just not ready to take right now.
As a military spouse I usually steer clear of military romances. All too often there are facts unchecked and the sometimes hard, gritty reality of military life is glossed over for the sake of romanticism. Kiden has done her homework and did an excellent job of telling it like it is. Deployments are hard, not only for the service member but their families, and just because they have returned doesn’t mean they come back as the same person they were when they left. Kiden explored that reality from several angles; the service member, the spouse, family, and the soldiers whose lives you were an integral part of during the deployment. Exploring all of these relationships helps to expose Emerson’s strength, as well her vulnerabilities.
This is the second book in the series, however the first book, Fall Out, is a prequel novella. It isn’t necessary to have read it in order to enjoy American Made, however it does give a lot more insight into the strength and depth of the relationships of the group of friends. American Made is told in a dual POV from both Emerson and Gentry’s points of view, providing excellent balance in the emotionally charged subject matter of the series. The book is sweet, sexy, and at times emotionally raw.
My only complaint with the book is the ending. It was abrupt; perhaps way too abrupt considering how much I enjoyed the book (I did stay up until 0230 to finish reading, after all). I would have loved to have been given just a little bit more of a glimpse into Emerson and Gentry’s life together, but I am holding out hope that they will be making appearances in subsequent books. Kiden has created characters that are so easy to care for and a storyline that immediately grabs your interest. I can’t wait to find out whose story we get next!
I love a strong heroine and Emerson is that and more, though the reasons she had to be so strong and able to handle so much on her own are heartbreaking. I enjoyed her character evolve and learn to accept help.
Yes I just need to say his name slowly and smile.
He's pretty close to perfect. Emerson changes him for the better and he becomes the man she can depend on, can let go with and open her heart and her mind. A man that can get all that has to be perfect!
Then there's Knox, Rush, Ari and Envy. The best secondary characters I've read in a long time. True friends. I loved everything about this book, and though I understood Emerson's reasons for being mad at Gentry, Rush and Envy I sided with Gentry knowing that whatever happened before her was the past.
I look forward to what comes next in this series.
I got to read the prequel to kind of introduce everyone and also this one. I loved this book. Getting to see everyone that was involved in the life and seeing the bad ass Emerson Hollis who had been working in a mans world for so long. She didn't give an eff. And I loved that about her.
People were always going to mess with her but the thing is, even though she has all these guys protecting her she was able to handle herself. She didn't want anything in terms of a relationship. In walks Gentry, who isn't going to let her just walk away. He makes her feel things she had never felt before. Opens up his world. With her new job. New boyfriend and her old wounds coming to head it is a lot for Emerson to handle.
I hope this is going to be more from this series because let me tell you these characters are absolutely beautiful. Emerson is such a beautiful heroine and I love the vagina squad. Can't wait to watch out for more from this author.
I just love a military story.
Poor Emerson is shot whilst on a mission. She is a top sniper. This injury spins her life upside down. At home, recovering, she catches up with her best friend, Knox. He has a friend , Gentry.
Gentry is an Air, Sea Rescue man. There is a spark between the two.
Neither are relationship people. Both are a bit afraid of their feelings. Gentry proves to Emerson that he is not just after sex. H.O.T!!
Love the characters and the writing. The relationships between the friends is real.
The suffering that soldiers go through, real.
