The book has facts, names, dates, and each and every "story" in the book can be looked up online and read about as most of them were in the news or reported in one or several newspapers at the time. I remember hearing about all this when it was going down- the Sandinista's, the contras, the various paramilitary groups from columbia all fighting one another and getting weapons from the US. It was all about cocaine- and now it makes sense. Barry Seal was flying it from Columbia to the US---arkansas of all places where the then attorney general and governer was Bill Clinton. He was getting paid and getting some of the "inventory"- The movie doesn't get into this part of the story- but it apparently did happen and now it makes perfect sense. Barry Seal was working directly for the CIA and was provided the planes, the money, the ability to get "off the hook" if problems arose- and those in the "know" were all paid handsomely to make sure things went as they were supposed to.
When you hear the Black community claim that the US Govt has supplied Coke and Crack in their neighborhoods- so that they can be tossed in prison- and you see the huge population of African Americans in prison for drug crimes- it makes sense but you sort of chalk it up as sour grapes. When you read this book, you begin to realize that our Govt is probably doing this.
I have read some of the authors other books and I find him to be credible and honest- and his writing style lends itself to an entertaining and fun read.
The take aways from this book are that our Govt is up to some very corrupt and dirty tricks, the war on drugs is a sham designed to finance the justice system- look at all the new buildings in any city- they are all jails and courts. Where does all that money come from? Non violent drug offenders.
It makes me sick- I no longer believe ANY news I hear or see on TV, and I no longer believe anything that the government says without gathering more information. Great book I highly recommend it and suggest that everyone does and comes to their own conclusions. It will make you think differently and look at the news and our govt differently.
If this book doesn't make you question the current state of affairs in America then nothing else will.
Shaun has the biggest brass cojones to tell the stories he does and risk his life telling the truth.
