One of my favorite stories is Nurture, which I decided to read again. The second reading revealed more than the first time, rewarding me for the effort. I will refrain from giving away the plot, but I would call it a psychological thriller.
I also loved Mugwumps, a short story about a despicable character that someone tries to stop. One thing about Hank is that his stories often show characters that go from bad to worse. You find yourself on the edge of your seat, wondering how in the world the characters are going to get out. The creature in this story has a vivid description that helps make a scary story horrific.
Natural Selection is another must read. I read this a couple of times, like I did with Nurture. The creatures come to life. The story leaps off the page, and the characters are well defined. I loved the story arc in this particular piece. The twist in this story is great.
I have had the luck of reading Hank’s work many times before, and he keeps me coming back. It’s not every day that you find an author that can think outside the box while not making something outlandish. It is a delicate balance. His work with short fiction is only matched by his work in long fiction. If you like long horror fiction, I suggest you check more of his work.
In closing, if you are looking for a good anthology, I suggest you give American Nocturne a read. It’s like 3 bucks on Kindle. It will be the best three dollars you have spent in a while.
