Worth the read. Although I didn't grow up in the 50s, it still brought back memories of us going all over the eastern USA and southern US growing up. My dad was in the Army, but that was before I was born. For some reason, we could never stay in one place. Always moving from here to there, and when we weren't in the middle of a move, we were going on great family Vaca...In a big ole station wagon.

Anyhow, this Author had a way of writing that drew you right in, and made you feel like you were sitting beside him as the miles flew behind you. Will be looking for more of his work!

I was not aware of this author until a blurb about this book popped up on my Kindle. Intrigued by the preview, I decided to order it. As someone who traveled all over the country with my grandparents in the late '50s, early '60s, I was curious about the author's take on his roadtrip. While the book was good, it was a little short on discussing the trip and the scenery and more about his dysfunctional family. Of course, I realize those were stories that needed to be told, but I came away feeling like he really didn't enjoy the trip as much as he could have, given the circumstances. I have ordered the follow-up book, "Island Jewel" and will see how that reads.

The references in the book to both sibling relationships and the military life style brought back a lot of memories for me. I loved the passages stated from the child's perspective. Funny ... but so true! The military life is ever changing but those of us who lived in it can relate to the descriptions. Looking forward to reading the next one! :-)

Though a 1957 Chevy Nomad station wagon is the vehicle transporting the family, the real nomad of this book is Jewel, a wryly observant young boy who begins his journey into manhood on their cross-country trip. At times hilarious and heart wrenching, 'American Nomad' is a complex and compelling tale of familial relationships, how they shape and ultimately define us. A must-read!

I loved reading American Nomad by Dr. Frank Pickard. I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to see the next step in the families trip across the U.S. I have read all of Dr. Pickard's books and have enjoyed them very much. I would recommend this book to everyone. Definitely a 5 star book.

Frank Pickard did it again. A novel, imitating his life, about a boy traveling across the country to board the SSLurline to Hawaii. An unforgettable journey of an American family: mom, dad, brother and 7 year old Jewel. Even if you didn't grow up in the 1950's, you will enjoy the journey when life was simpler.
