I will admit that I have a problem, and the problem is that I love freeze dried ice cream to an unhealthy degree. I will also admit that I accidentally purchased these while drunk without realizing that they were sandwiches and not the classic plain ice cream version. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them thoroughly.

I have to dock one star though because the texture of the sandwich is wildly different from that of the ice cream - it's a lot more brittle, and a lot less soluble (in your mouth, duh!) making getting a cohesive bite of both cookie and ice cream very difficult without spraying crumbs literally EVERYWHERE like some kind of desserty frag grenade and which, I imagine, would be kind of a problem if we were in a zero gravity environment. Seriously I had to eat these all standing over the sink. Pretty tasty though.

I was hesitant to purchase from this vendor based on earlier reviews about how the ice cream arrived in a pulverized mess. I must say all 10 of 10 packets arrived in perfect condition. I have purchased Astronaut Ice Cream several times at the LA Science Center and once from the NASA experience store in the airport on a lay over in Texas, and the quality was identical to what arrived via Amazon.

For those of you who haven't experienced Astronaut Ice Cream -- you should try it at least once. It is not cold, melty, real ice cream, so don't expect that. It feels like a very light meringue block when you pull it out of the wrapper, and once you pop it in your mouth it has a creamy texture and ice cream-like flavor. We are addicted.

My son is taking his packets on a week-long high Sierra backpacking trip next week. We once took Astronaut ice cream with us to the top of the Mayan pyramids in Tikal, Guatemala and shared it with our guide and other trekkers. A fun, and very special treat.

I always wanted to be an astronaut. People really underestimate the pressure they are under (or lack there of in space, heh heh).

Anywho.. I purchased these to begin my training regiment. And let me tell you. It is a lot harder to eat all of these space ice cream sandwhiches in one sitting than someone would let you think. I can see why they train for years before they go up into space. By the tenth package, I was was like. "get me back to earth". Glad I went, but happy I am back. It was an experience.

When we were at the Denver Museum in March my nephew waited, sometimes patiently, the ENTIRE day before we hit the gift shop so he could purchase his Astronaut Neapolitan Ice Cream. After that I knew EXACTLY what he was getting from us for his July b-day.

Had it sent directly to his house and it was a success. Only minor problem was that he said there were only 9 in what was supposed to be a 10 pack. Did not see it myself so I don't know if the box was damaged and one fell out or if it was just short shipped. Never the less he was ecstatic with his gift and I might send him another round for Christmas.

This is the classic space ice cream and it's good. It comes in a double-sealed set of pouches. First is a thick foil sealed pouch and inside is a paper-sealed package of a block of the dehydrated ice cream. It's a special treat and my kids liked the novelty of it - and it does taste like ice cream. The package that I had, though, had a defect. The inner paper pouch had been partially sliced open. It looked like it had been sliced open when they were unboxing them to put in the foil pouches? The outer foil pouch itself was still sealed.

It says 'Neapolitan'. but don't let those nerds down in Cape Canaveral fool you! This stuff is totally Space Flavored! It says "natural and artificial ingredients", but I know that just means powdered space shuttle fuel and jellied instant mashed potatoes. This stuff ISS great! (See what I did there? No? Okay, well it was pretty lame anyway)

UPDATE

Upon further sartorial and mathematical research, I found this to be made with bits of real astronaut, not that imitation bullcrap from North Korea that's been flooding the market lately.

I ate one of these the other day and suddenly and involuntarily began saying all my sentences starting with, "Houston..." It was great fun.

I also peed into a bag! Well, that was more of something I elected to do than anything else, but it was great!

I have purchased the mountain house brand of neapolitan ice cream many many times. Its a fantastic product, but then the price shot up and the astronaut brand was cheaper. (To put this into perspective, I have bought over 100 pouches of freeze dried ice cream products, so price and quality are very important).

So after the examination and taste test here is the verdict. The size/weight/quality of this brand seems to be on par with mountain house. But the flavor and texture is slightly better.

These are very close contenders. So which one will I buy next? That depends on the price. I would pay a little more for this brand, but not a lot more.
