This pictorial history book consists mostly of large, clear pictures of PT boats and the people who served on them. I enjoyed reading about the PT boat tactics, formations and seamanship. Actual diagrams from declassified "PT Boat Tactical Orders and Doctrine" provided an easy understanding of squadron operations. There aren't a whole lot of PT boat books out there - but I consider this book one of the best! It really is worth the price if you're a PT boat enthusiast as I am.

I bought the book for reference in building a model of a late war Elco 80'. I was disappointed in what I got for my $40. It is indeed a picture book. It contains page after page of original construction drawings of dubious worth, and some photos I had not seen before. Looking though the credits I was struck with the thought that it appeared as though the author had just published everything he could get his hands on from the PT Boat Museum. Color profile plates (read original material) of camoflage measures are absent. There is not much here that is not available from other less expensive books, and a little research by the truly interested. The organization of the book left alittle to be desired as well. The chapter titles could used a little more thought. Overal it struck me as a make money quick endeavor by publishing a ton of material available through government sources. Very little original synthesis of the material was done. This volume is more like a scrapbook.

When you look at a PT boat, it doesn't look that powerful. But thesae vessels destroyed enemy ships many times their size. It must have been exhilarating and frightening to on one of these tiny boats in an attack. They took part in some of the pacific wars biggest operations. It went to show, at least in my mind, that size is not always the major factor in an engagment. JRV

This book is great, primarily because of the pictorial treatment of the subject. As retired Navy, I have read extensively the history of World War II and specifically of the U.S. Navy role in winning the war. The exploits of the PT boats in the Pacific theater were of special interest. The detailed pictures of the interior and exteriors of the PT boat in the book are particularly good. I found the book to be very helpful in seeing pictorially what fighting the war in PT boats was like. The many original drawings of the profile and deck plans alone are worth a purchase.

No PT expert here, so this is a step up from the Squadron PT book for me & it's fairly useful. Picture quality is decent with many shots new to me. Text is sparse.

I get the impression that the author just gathered all the PT stuff he could find & put it into a book. Approx. the last 1/3 of the book is copies of plans & drawings from the manufacturer of Elco boats. For the most part they seem marginally useful as there is no scale & are reproduced so small as to be virtually unusable for detail even with a magnifying glass.

Until I can find a better book this one will do.

I am researching American PT boats used during WWII and find that this book is a very good reference tool to help me in that research. Up until this purchase I could find very little in the form of pictures to help me complete a scale model of a typical PT boat used in the Pacific theatre. Thanks to the author for a fine book.

I will, someday, embark on building a couple of PT boat I bought. Since for me, the research is as much fun as exercising my limited modelling skills, I bought this. There were a lot of gripes about how much it cost, how the material was duplicated in other books, etc. I won't argue with that. But I will say that for a guy whose total knowledge of PT boats came from McHale's Navy, that the pictures are excellent, the text informative, and I came away knowing and respecting these men and their wooden boats. It was worth the price to this newbie, YMMV.

If you are seeking the history of the development and use of the motor torpedo boats of the USN in WWII, here it is. Author Victor Chun has spent decades putting PT Boat stuff together. This book is the first of two coffee table type editions full of pland, diagrams, drawings, formal USN and ELCO corporate photos, squadron photos and snapshots by PT crewmen. Mostly black and white, there are color photos here and there too. Remember, when these photos were being taken, b&w photography was 95% of all photos made. So much info was collected that to date, two of these collections have been published. The book is a history book, but really aimed at the modeler of nautical stuff, with many photos showing models built of these little Mosquito boats who carried more than their share of the load in the early days of the Pacific war. I recommend it if you fall into the file of such interested persons.
