When I search for a movie, I do so realizing that whatever I watch will use up nearly 2 hours that I could spend on something more productive. So, quality is important to me.
This movie is rated PG13 for a handful of profanity, two light kissing scenes, and one brief scene with minor adult sexual content.
I recommend this movie to mature audiences. It's good entertainment.
The movie itself is wonderful. It's a romantic comedy that features Michael Douglas as U.S. President Andrew Shepard, who's also a widower with a teen-age daughter. He falls in love with Sydney Ellen Wade (played by Annette Bening), who's a lobbyist for an environmental group that opposes some of Shepard's energy policies. Sparks fly between the President, the lobbyist, and some of the President's other political enemies who want to use the issue of his affair to score political points against him.
"The American President" is filled with humor in a script written by Aaron Sorkin. The dialogue is sharp and fast, as is often the case with Sorkin's best work. The acting by the ensemble cast (Douglas, Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, David Paymer, Richard Dreyfuss, and others) sparkles throughout the movie.
What makes this version of "The American President" especially enjoyable is the quality of the video and audio. This is the first time I've ever seen the film in any other format that the tired old DVD copy I've owned for years. Instead of the dated, non-anamorphic, low resolution version found on my disc, I was treated to a full-blown high definition edition replete with 5.1 surround sound. It was like watching it for the very first time. It was indeed a revelation to me to view "The American President" the way it must have looked in theaters.
