If you're like me and you like to read the 1-star reviews to balance out the 5-star, and you are reading the things about a woman falling in love with two men who happen to be best friends, two men who happen to be the most powerful men in the free world, about accidental incest, about a love triad which includes the love two men have for each other...then please realize that this set of books is the re-telling of King Arthur, his queen Guinevere, and knight Lancelot. The things that happen in this book are all part of that centuries old tale...albeit it fact or fiction.
This is part one a three-part series, and it ends on a cliff-hanger. As a stand-alone, I think it's the weakest of the three books, but it's necessary as a stepping stone to get to the next two books. On it's own, it's NOT a bad book, not at all; it's just as hot and dark as you'd hope from a Sierra Simone book.
Greer is a young woman, and through this book we get some sense of her thoughts and emotions, we understand her background and her life as a young adult, but there's not really much personality here beyond her fascination and yearning for these two men. We understand her motives, and we get to be her as we fall in love with these two men. It's hot, it's dirty, and it's fabulous.
Yes it's over the top that she sees Ash just one time for one hour and is completely devoted to him, and he her. Yes it's over the top that she runs into his best friend Embry after learning of Ash's upcoming marriage, and also falls in love with Embry almost as quickly and deeply. Yes it's unrealistic that she goes from being practically a virgin to being a full-fledged submissive, one who accepts all of the things that Ash wants from her. But my, what lucky coincidences. What a lucky girl.
Many others have mentioned that they would have loved her more if she had stood up for herself a little more, make Ash work a little harder, and I second those thoughts. I get that she's submissive, but still... It's not enough to dislike this book though, nor to take a single star away from it.
This is erotica, so there is a lot of 'action', and it's very bluntly worded. If you're squeamish or like your heated moments to be whispers of love and admiration, this is NOT for you. And, if you' have issues with same sex relationships, this is also not for you. I've never been interested in M/M relationships, I'm not against it in any way, it's just not my thing and I've never had any interest in reading more of it...but if Sierra Simone writes only M/M for the rest of her career, I'll read every bit of it.
SO, in conclusion: Yes this book has its weaknesses, yes there's a lot of astronomical coincidences (as in most romance novels), but if you like dark, honest, gritty, brutal, sublime love stories, then you're going to love this book.
But please, make sure you read at least the next book so you get a real sense of the importance of Greer's story.
My book club said the series is heart wrenching and amazing, but I can't even finish this book. I'm half way through (I'll try to finish it but I'm already skimming the ridiculousness as is), and as a fellow 26yo woman I HATE this heroine.
She's weak, naive, shallow, has no personality, no confidence, and is an outright fool. I haven't even gotten into the nitty gritty of the plot (literally, at 50% done and nothing has really happened yet...), but I simply cannot like her.
-She orgasms 4x the night she loses her virginity. What. That's not even realistic at all.
-She is in love with two men, yet she has spoken with one of them once in 5 years and the other twice in 10 years. C'mon, there's unrequited love and then there's being an absolute idiot.
-She has also only ever kissed these two men, and has had sex once (ever), but is fully ok being demeaned and told to be a submissive. How would she even know she's into that without some more mild experiences first?
-She has zero self worth (think Ana Steele from 50 Shades, but 10x worse)
-The "hero" figures seem like terrible people...yet they were elected in President and VP at 35 years old? Two military men with very limited political skill yet they were elected literally at 35 years old. Nice try.
-I'm not seeing much plot--there's erotic to further a plot and then there's erotic for the sake of not bothering with a real plot. This falls into the latter.
Apparently this is supposed to be a beautiful love triangle, but it is looking like it's a man on man on woman situation, and I'm not into threesomes.
Top international reviews
I've had my eye on this one for a while, and, on a lonely winter night, decided to invest and give it a read. Boy, was I sucked in, reading into the early hours of the morning to devour this.
I love this cover. I love the anonymity, the elegance, and how beautifully it provides a mere taste of what is to come. It's sensual but not cheap, subtly erotic, and something which immediately caught my attention.
Although verging on the slightly improbably, I just couldn't get enough of this plot. There is little I will go into in this review because, like any of my rare five-star ratings, I am passionate—absolutely passionate—about new readers going into this book totally blind. Just like me. What I will say is that the fairytale themes woven through this are beautiful. There is so much angst and confusion here but it all comes across as totally warranted, working within these characters' personalities, rather than forced to propel drama.
The absolute highlight, above the incredibly steamy erotica which had me reaching for my vibrator, was how intelligible and gorgeous Sierra Simone's writing was. I don't think I've ever highlighted so many passages on my Kindle before, with words that truly penetrated my soul, some harrowing, some heartbreaking, others filthy and powerful. Just look at the quotes already saved on Goodreads if you don't believe me. And the best part? The intelligence of the narrative felt so in-line with the characters. It was truly like nothing I have come across in contemporary romance before. In fact, I think Simone is one of the most talented writers out there—and I've only read one of her books!
Flawlessly executed, these characters have their demons, their pasts, their anxieties and their lies...and all these facets combine to form three perfectly crafted people. Their interactions with one another feel real, authentic, perfect.
Even the supporting cast is strong. Of particular interest to me was Merlyn, the nightmarish figure of Greer's childhood, and his role in this tale. And it's fantastic to find antagonists who seem as fleshed out as the protagonists.
If you haven't yet grasped my point, READ THIS BOOK. READ IT RIGHT NOW. It's outrageously sexy, touching, and sharp. I can't say any more about it other than that it is a decision you will not regret.
Onto book two!
The sex scenes were some of the hottest that I have EVER read, but nothing could prepare me for the M/M sex scenes which I didn't like. Not to my taste. I thought it was going to be a story about 2 men fighting for one woman's affections which is was, sort of.
Just a 3 star for me.
I have put off reading American 1ueen for many reasons. Not least of which is I was afraid. Afraid I wouldn't enjoy it as much as everyone else who raved about it. Afraid that for what ever reason it would not live up to the expectations I gave it. But I needn't have worried, because it lived up to the hype and surpassed all my expectations. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be beautiful. Beautiful because they find what they are needing in each other. Beautiful because they are gifted with a second chance that neither of them could have foreseen.
The scenes between Ash and Greer leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. I found myself cringing at some of the depravity, but it was always consensual and formed part of the storyline. It was never added in just for the sake of it. It was always to make you understand what made the characters tick.
I hope I survive American Prince, because I will be honest, American Queen almost finished me off!
This trilogy was getting a lot of hype several months ago so I had no choice to put it on my TBR, now I've read the first instalment I can see the buzz was well deserved.
Greer our little princess is a smart girl (with blindspots) having grown up around political and industrial powerhouses she has developed quite the knack for reading people and she knows how to play the game although she becomes reluctant to participate. She is at once both insecure (thank you Merlin) and yet secure enough to know what she wants.
What she wants is a powerful man in the bedroom and who is more powerful than the President maybe the Vice President?
What unfolds is an impassioned story which shows love comes in many forms, the writing style is superb and the emotion just jumps off the page, and of course it gets a lot dirty.
Be warned though there is a heck of a cliffhanger.
American Queen is a scandalous love story spanning a decade, and it's clearly just the beginning. It tackles difficult subjects including PTSD and the effects of war, while still being a white-hot romance.
The characters are exceptionally well-written and I adore the subtle references in their story to the legends of King Arthur. Having the lead character work with these stories and being able to see the comparisons between the characters really adds another layer of depth and intrigue to the story.
I loved it but I found it hard to connect sometimes to the characters. Maybe it's because I wanted to slap them I'm not sure.
I did like Greer she was just a child at the beginning of the book but then she sometimes seemed to be to childlike during her adult years, especially for the things she was doing. Her naivety was a bit unbelievable at times.
The President was a very Dominant character but I couldn't understand his actions at times. He's a very self centred Man who wants to control everyone and he treats certain people like his possessions.
He was very domineering which suited him but also made him an arrogant ass.
The whole story was intense i never quite knew where it was going it was enjoyable and kept my attention throughout.
I'm looking forward to reading the next part.
This is a must read book
Don’t read if you are not very open minded. If you are, this is a MUST read.
This was also one of the hottest books I have ever read! The hotness level is off the charts!
It took me a while to buy the book as I hate unfinished series and cliffys, but now that it done, I’m so glad I’ve decided to buy it!
This book is one that will stay with me for a very long time.
It was a little slow to begin with for me but it was always engaging so I stuck with it and now I am all in. A good read, I won't give any spoilers but the ending of this book had me falling off a cliff. I have to march on to book 2 to see what happens next.
Definitely worth a read!
Awesome. Just awesome!
