Drawing from his long career as a leading international journalist and traveler, Eric Margolis presents an interesting look at how the U.S. has impacted the Muslim world in “American Raj.” Margolis is a fine writer with a strong background in history, religion and culture. All of that is evident as he offers a sweeping look at American blunders in Asia, Africa and even Europe. Even when readers will disagree with Margolis, they will not find this book disagreeable. Margolis has a fine style which keeps the reader engaged and, even though this book’s latest edition came out during the 2008 presidential cycle, it remains relevant.
One major caveat. The Kindle version of this book is poorly edited with plenty of typos, misspellings and wrong dates. I suspect the publisher simply transferred a file into a Kindle version without editing. This is one of those books I would advise getting in hard copy instead of Kindle for that very reason which is why I have hard copies at 5 stars and the Kindle version at 4.

This is an excellent book. Mr. Margolis provides exceptional insight through the use of detail historical information coupled with his own first hand observation. there were a number of instances in which the book provided information contrary to what I wanted to read; However, I could find no reason to challenge those inconvenient facts If you are seeking a genuine understanding of US problems in the Middle East I can think of no better book to read. Actually I can think of nothing which comes close. Although, I have to agree with the other review regarding several of the authors conclusions in the final chapter of the book. In my opinion, The solution is less intervention, not more enlightened interference in the affairs of other countries. On the other hand, that difference of opinion does not reduce my respect for the factual factual analysis contained in this book. I would recommend this book to a friend, I would especially recommended to a congressman

Useful primer on how things came to be as they are in the Islamic world and why the US is so unpopular there.
Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018Verified Purchase
The book provides an insider's view of the thinking of people in the middle east and some insight into the intractable conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. It confirms my personal bias against US military involvement in conflicts that we do not understand and should not meddle in. Ending with the G.W. Bush administration, some of the observations are rapidly growing dated and Margolis' prescriptions for a remedy for the Levantine and Islamic world's predicaments seems hopelessly dreamy and self contradictory. The author's explanation of the great power role in creating the current political situation is enlightening.
Technically, the e-book is a shambles, rife with typos and typographic anomalies. These, along with the author's occasionally clunky and repetitive writing style make this a good candidate for skimming rather than a close read. Worth the effort for the info on an important subject.

I give it four stars only because his solutions at the end of the book would be better than status quo but still leave too much US influence. If other nations want to interfere, they are welcome to the blowback. All the information prior is fantastic and very informative about what their gripes are against us and against each other. Some may consider Margolis too favorable to the Muslims but I would point out how much he faults them for not living up to their own professed ideals. I greatly enjoyed this book. I recommend it very highly to anyone who actually is interested in the issues on the ground instead of the soundbites from the talking heads on Fox and CNN.

When Margolis wrote for the Toronto Sun, I had always enjoyed his intelligent and knowledgeable style. Unfortunately, he seems to be well schooled in the Soviet art of disinformation. My suggestion is that he rinse well with mouthwash after having given Islam such a tongue bath.

With "American Raj", we are fortunate indeed to have as narrator an author with decades of experience in the hot spots of the world, an author who really gets it. Given his encyclopedic-knowledge of the Middle East and South Asia, and Were it within my power, I would unhesitatingly nominate Mr. Margolis for the post of U.S. Secretary of State.
Laid out in exhaustingly researched detail, "America Raj" is the story of colonial overlords, possessed with a Mongol-like disdain for non-western lives and an insatiable thirst for the resources of other nations. Dressed up as a war on something, terror, drugs, humanitarian casuses, etc., etc., western powers have and continue to devour the resources of others as might a blight of locusts in a wheat field.
As one of my favorite literary pugilists, Mr. Margolis pulls no punches in his analysis of the root-cause of what today is termed "terrorism."
"American Raj" guides us through the turbulent history of colonialism, that has, beyond doubt, certified that resistance to foreign occupation and resource exploitation is [the] principal motive-force behind what is conveniently coined as terrorism by western powers, currently their self-serving leit motif for state-sponsored plunder.
In summation, "American Raj" is the best of the genre regards the currency and philosphy of the axiom that those "who ignore history are doomed to repeat it." Policy makers and imperialists in the West would do well to read this book and heed many of the recommendations articulated by the author. The road to a peaceful co-existence with the Muslim world is profoundly yet precisely chartered in this masterful work.

Margolis describes key historical events in the Muslim world and in the west and accurately talks about the results. He accurately describes the complexities of the Muslim world and the misinformation rampant throughout the west and the east.
A very good and enlightening book.

Mr Margolis has hit the nail once again with this book it's historical content exposes British empire and american imperialism which hides it motives behind noble causes like human rights and democracy and gives hope that American just like the Soviets before them can be defeated and driven from Muslim lands.the book also show the human side of these conflicts and how civilians suffer the horrors of conflicts like the Afghan war and unlike arm chair writer the author has actually fought on front lines with the mujahideen which is extremely brave also like the solutions he provides to end the american imperialism and hope the Arab world can shake off the shackles of nearly 100 years of being told what to do by the British then by the Americans.

Islam and the West - No reason to choose sides
Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2009Verified Purchase
Watching FOX TV programing and reading newspapers, I have frequently heard questions like why is that in the present times, each and every conflict in the world seem to involve Muslims. Is there something wrong with them? This book has enabled me to find an answer for this very question. Most writers of the books on Islam as a religion and the West demand that you take a side. However, in my opinion, there are no sides, only knowledge that should help to bring hearts and minds together.
This book walks us through the early history of Islam, Muslim contribution towards scientific and knowledge based development, destruction of Muslims' research work by Tatars of Ganghis Khan (that Margolis very interestingly calls 13th century equivalent of nuclear bomb), West's and Russia's colonization of Muslim lands, movements of freedom by Muslims from time to time, the problems that Muslims have faced in the recent past and the present, such as Palestine, Afghanistan, Chechniya, Balkans (Bosnia and Kosova), Iraq, Iran, Lebenon, Algeria, Egypt, Kashmir, the War on Terror, etc, and finally a realistic roadmap recommended by the author for bringing harmony between Muslims and the West.
I have always liked reading columns by Eric Margolis that get published in Toronto Sun every Sunday. However, this is his first book that I have read and I have no hesitation in stating that it is the best book ever written on the theme of 'clash of civilizations'.

A great read

Both of Eric Margolis books on the matter offer a personal perspective that other books on the subject cannot. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend as one of my top ten books about middle east foreign policy. I have probably read a couple hundred and Seymour Hersh has 2 in my top ten so that's saying a lot.
