is very easy to use. The backlight is quite bright. I like
the fact it has 2 broad ranges (lo / hi) and not 4 or 6
narrow ranges like some other meters out there.
The unit feels very solid and high quality, however
the windshield comes off too easily. Not a problem really.
My only real gripe is the auto-off feature. The unit turns
itself off about 15 minutes after you turn it on,
regardless if you operate the buttons in the mean time.
For the price ($70) I can't complain. Other meters at this
price do not have any kind of standards conformance.
This unit shows IEC651 / ANSI S1.4, and Type 2
(type 1 is the most accurate, but most expensive too,
type 3 is the cheapest and worst accuracy).
Note: I opened it up and saw DT-805 printed in the circuit
board (actually DT-805A-4).
It looks like this is a rebranded DT-805 meter by CEM
company. The Nady DSM-1 and Extech 407732 look to be the
same as well.
These are great and pricey meters, and the ART brand has
the cheapest price of them all for the same thing.
Go for it!
I tried the $49 Radio Shack meter but found that it lacked sufficient bass sensitivity that the subwoofer level was way off.
A friend offered his $1 sound level application for his i-phone but it was even worse than the Radio Shack meter.
I then tried the American Recorder meter and was able to reach a sufficiently good balance that the system sounded good - at an affordable price. I won't tell you that this meter has a flat response curve, especially in the bass region but it is sufficiently sensitive to the subwoofer frequencies that I was able to get close to balanced. Probably the $350 meter may have been better but, I have a simple home theater to keep in balance along with some other sound applications that I didn't need perfect response (and I didn't want to pay $350 (remember the key word), if I didn't have to). This meter was certainly good enough to get all the 6 surround speakers balanced - especially the center channel against the surrounds and get the sub-woofer into the ballpark wherein with a few manual adjustments on the sub gave me a great sounding system.
i bought several different spl meters to try
as my old radio shack is getting intermittent after 40 years
the price is cheap
very easy to use
very easy to turn on and select settings
goes down to 30dB which is better than my current spl meter
does not turn off like two of the others do
has max hold capability
can choose a/c weight
has thread for tripod mount
no storage box just a plastic wrapper and cardboard back
no real manual - read basics on the back of the card
uses 9v batteries
one other similar unit use AA which are more convenient
no way to calibrate
manual is not really adequate
can use ac voltage adapter but does not
tell you directly what kind of wallwart
can infer from markings on unit
there are many meters here that look basically the same
except for the case - sinometer is one with different color
the HDE and NEEWER versions are identical
i ended up with two of the same meter thinking they were different
this one (ART ) has a different button orientation but otherwise seems to be a cousin to the other units
perhaps these are made in the same chinese factory with different labels
sinometer is the best (see that review)
this one - american recorder technologies from music 123 is second place and slightly better than these two similar ones (hde and neewer). see separate review for others
recommended - yes -
sinometer is imho somewhat better but you should like this unit if you dont need the other features that sinometer has
and this one is cheaper
