The American shorthair has been in the country for "almost four hundred years" when it was introduced by the early colonists. They were working cats and when they were crossing the Atlantic on board ships they would keep the varmint population down and keep the "ships' food supply" intact. Somewhere along the line "people began to want them as pets" undoubtedly because they were friendly, good looking, and fun to have around. In this book you'll learn about the basic needs of the American shorthair, what they cost, a list of things you'll need if you decide to take one home, the importance of proper veterinarian care, what they eat, their grooming needs, and many other interesting things about this beautiful charmer.
This is an excellent overview of the American shorthair for the young wannabe owner. This book is fascinating and the young reader will learn everything from the history of the breed to the fact that "American shorthairs tend to overeat." There are numerous informative sidebars, including an interesting on the importance of these cats during the early 1900s when the plague broke out in San Francisco. Of course if you do decide to bring one home you'll also need to purchase a breed specific book. There are a wide variety of appealing photographs of American shorthairs, including one especially adorable one of a cat having great fun with a toy ball. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore, including downloadable educational ones from the publisher's website.
