Thank you Hawkins Books for the clean crips book that you sent me. I received my purchase only a few short days after ordering it. I selected a textbook as "Condition: Used - Very Good" however the book I received looks brand new.

Thanks again and you have earned a lifetime customer!

After watching the "slave Narratives" on HBo I became reading more about slave life, I like the book but it's a lttle simplifed and the stories are too short not detailed enough.

important point of view. I would guess many modern blacks would have trouble with the subservient viewpoint of the story tellers. But we can't change history. The people in this book were the direct victims of slavery, and their actual way of thinking, no matter how unpopular should be examined.

This book is one told from the slave point of experience! They tell of unbelievable horror in the slavery system. They were treated like animals with less than livable homes to sleep and eat. They were sold, separating mothers, fathers, children, etc. for the duration of their lives. There was no continuity of family! It was illegal to learn to read and write! This happened over 200 years - from the 1600's to the 1800's. But in spite of their cruel treatment, they survived!!! Many of the former slaves, became renowned Ministers in the various church denominations and teachers of black children. They also became property owners and some served in the government. Emancipation, however, did not completely solve the black man's problem but it freed him from this terrible system of binding servitude! They had many problems to overcome, as is now. but it is legalize no more!

The style of writing was in a question and answer mode - a trusted person asked what was it like to live as a slave and the respondent answered by describing his/her daily life. Some of the stories were heartrending and almost unbelievable that any one could endure such suffering! It is well worth reading.
