"Each of us who loves the theatre has a secret list of the great shows we never got to see. That list keeps growing, no matter how diligent our theater going. So does our maddening sense of wistfulness and loss. This delectable volume offers comfort. Fortunately for us, great writers have always been on hand, sitting in the audience, to capture the best of those fleeting moments. Better yet, theatre has often fired their imaginations, stirring wide-ranging reflections on the world outside the playhouse. Laurence Senelick, the volume's judicious and tireless editor, has sifted through two centuries of the best writing about American theatre and put these literary riches on display. A more diversely entertaining collection is impossible to imagine. Open up this book to any page and experience the glories of two centuries of American theatre. You may feel a pang of remorse - stunning things happened onstage, and you missed out. But these writers bring the moments back to life. They will almost, almost make you feel that you were there."
-John Lithgow, from the foreword
