I have, of course, eaten German food before at one of the great restaurants in the area, but it never occurred to me that I could make it myself. This author broke the recipes down into baby steps and now I think I can delve into a brand new cuisine with confidence. I plan to check out her other books now that I have this one under my belt. I heartily recommend it.

There is much to like about the American Traditions: German Dinners for the Holidays cookbook by author Stephanie D. Berg. I loved most of the recipes and my only wish was the author providing a warning about eating raw meat in her German Steak Tartare recipe. Raw ground round beef is used to make this appetizer. A food safety note should have been included with the recipe as the USDA does not recommend eating raw ground beef. In fact, the author probably should have suggested grinding the beef at home, if you plan to try this recipe.

Other recipes you will find in her cookbook include:

German Meatballs

Kassler Rippchen (One of my favorite German recipes)

Roasted Goose w/Apple Prune Stuffing

Potato Dumplings

Hot German Potato Salad

There is an interactive table of contents making navigation easy.

Recommend with caveats given.

As a kid, my mom would make us German food since we had relatives that came from that country. I always loved it, so I was really excited to get this book. I'm particularly looking forward to trying the Hot German Potato Salad and the Pretzles!

Sad to say I am the older generation now, so do not have mom and grandma to cook for me. I used to only get German food a couple times a year when we visited, but my kids have been bugging me to cook some of the old recipes, and I realized I didn't even have then written down. Then along comes this book, and I am now living my childhood past with my own children, one delicious recipe after another. Buy yourself a copy today.

Can't wait to try the Hot German Potato Salad - my favorite thing to order in a German restaurant. I'm sure I'll do the "whole German meal deal" by creating a menu including selections from this cookbook for the appetizers, entree, sides, deserts and drinks. The most compelling title and a must-try for me is the "Viennese Flaming Fire Tongs Punch!" I can see myself with chef's hat donned, dimming the dining room lights and creating this one in front of guests. Hmmm, since fire is involved, I think I'll try it privately first!

I love German food and I have a few friends and family members who cook and love recipes, so I thought I'd try this book. It has some great recipes! I passed this book on to them. I can't cook to save my life, but two of my friends really love German food. I was impressed with the German meatballs, chicken, broccoli souffle, and the many different salads. If you love German food, then you must pick up this book. Definitely recommended!
