This is a moving story about a man on a journey for self-awareness, acceptance, and peace. As a successful entrepreneur and devoted husband and father, he searches for answers to life's questions by way of a spiritual based self-help program,"The Work", while literally "fighting" for other answers as an MMA sparring partner to some of the worlds most prolific fighters.
I would never want to assume David's intent for this books meaning. I can only speak for what I learned from reading it. For me, this book provides a simple "truth". None of us are victims. I personally experienced various forms of physical and sexual abuse in my own childhood. For years I impulsively self-medicated with alcohol to numb "feelings" of pain, anger, and resentment. David's willingness to share his story reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles and that our story doesn't have to define who we are. Our story is always evolving. If we can muster the courage to look inward as well as accept the help of others... If we are willing to accept accountability for ourselves, accept life on life's terms, and accept people for who they are, we can better find our ourselves, our meaning here in this life, peace and happiness.
This book is will draw you in. You will feel as though you are right by David's side as you read it. You will feel every emotion he writes of as though it is your own. I have already shared "American Trauma" with a number of friends and associates in my recovery group. I cannot say enough great things about this book. It is equally entertaining as it is meaningful. It would make for an amazing movie. I give it my highest recommendation.
If you live with and/or work with someone who has experienced abuse/trauma and want to understand them on another level, if you have experienced abuse/trauma yourself and are ready for the next level of healing, or if you are interested in learning how someone can triumph over trauma, this is the book for you.
This book was written with great courage and a commitment to shift how we look at childhood mental, physical, and emotional abuse and its impact on individuals, families, and society as a whole.
Thank you, Dave! Although you may never see the impact you have made, I can confidently promise you that it is great!
