In 1801, America experiences brutal attacks on its ships by government sponsored pirates, whose extortion demands have grown to reach twenty percent of the entire government's budget. Based on actual historical events, 'An American Victory' tells the story of an audacious act of defiance against organized terror that forever changes the lives of all those caught in the swirling struggle, and the path of a nation. A dazzling collection of current Broadway stars, including Ashley Brown, Adam Jacobs, Jeremy Hayes, Samantha Hill, Ramin Karimloo, Hugh Panaro, Aaron Tveit and many others give their incredible performances and portrayal of characters and moments from An American Victory, brilliantly bringing to life this powerful and epic page from history.

The selected songs by Broadway musicals newcomer Louis R. Bucalo are terrific. There are enough ballads here for a couple of musical, 13 of the 21 songs. A skilled production team would certainly inform Mr. Bucalo that three needs to be a little more variety in the music, though all 21 of these tracks work for me. An analogy might be the early musicals of Frank Wildhorn, such as “Jekyll and Hyde”, which had lush melodies in profusion and similarly began life as concept albums. With its compelling story and all this beautiful music, I would be happy to produce this show.
Somewhere Mr. Bucalo has some financing, too, because he has collaborated with seven other orchestrators on some lush orchestrations that are delivered with a large-scale symphonic sound. Songs are performed by 16 different singers and include names that I recognized: Ashley Brown, Ramin Kamerloo, Aaron Tveitt. Only the final number, a stirring antherm, “A Change Will Come”, involves a chorus, credited to “The New York Choral Society”. There are songs with multiple singers though.
I wish Mr. Bucalo every success in turning this show into a stage production. I will look forward to seeing it with much anticipation. Until then, I certainly appreciate the confidence that Broadway Records has shown in this show in producing this wonderful CD.
