By Gonzalo T. Palacios on April 6, 2013
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Eran Shalev's AMERICAN ZION reveals the powerful influence of the Old Testament in American political culture: Gonzalo T. Palacios' THE VIRGIN MARY'S REVOLUTION provides a similar insight into present-day sexual mores. Shalev's closing lines in his conclusion confirm the similitude of both authors' intelligence: "The articulation of the United States as a Second Israel set the stage for the nation's distinct confluence of Christianity and modernity, helping to ensure that the two would never be in confrontation as they are (and still are) in Europe." AMERICAN ZION is well researched and quite readable; congratulations are due to Dr. Shalev. Gonzalo T. Palacios, Ph.D., CUA 1970.

In American Zion author Eran Shalev demonstrates in the first two chapters how the American populous was able to adapt the Old Testament to absorb classical forms of political thought during the American Revolution and how Americans tried to find a God sanctioned endorsement for their new national identity by equating the American Republic to perceived political similarities in what was termed the “Hebrew Republic.” In chapters three and four Shalev illustrates how the antiquated language of the KJV stimulated a genre of pseudo-biblical literature both politically and religiously, even affecting the Book of Mormon and how American’s for their love of the O.T. and their belief of being a “New Israel” sought to go a step further in identifying the Indians as the ten lost tribes. In chapter five and the conclusion Shalev explains the demise of the O.T as a favored political text with the Great Awakening emphasizing Christ and the New Testament and with Civil War theologians and politicians finding it more useful to contrast the institution of slavery with Israel and America rather than compare the similarities between the two nations. Shalev ends by writing that without a study of what he terms “American Hebraism,” it’s hard to explain how politics in the 20th century such as the Civil Rights movement could resonate so strongly or nationally or how many Americans today see themselves as a nation that still has God’s smile.
