Everything I thought I knew and was taught in school about tycoons, empires and philanthropy were wrong and this book tells the truth and blows the lid off of all the myths. Highly recommended.

Excellent book with information indispensable for understanding the U.S. political economy. Lundberg is a top-notch non-fiction writer; his prose is a delight. The focus is on the 1930s and backwards to the robber baron era. But with respect to the matters Lundberg addresses, not much has changed.

Americans should rethink the whole government system. Voting is merely the illusion of choice. The 1% = OZ.

Between this book and "Empire of Oil", one can become quite disheartened about the political environment of the United States. Throw in "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man", and you'll have a trifecta of books proving to you that "Yes, Virginia, there really ARE conspiracies." I don't mean aliens and military coups, but the kind where a few rich people set the agenda for the world based on spreadsheets, land holdings, urban planning, labor relations, energy price manipulation and political favors. Take a walk into the marble halls of family estates that are so big, they can give city blocks for parks in order to raise the value of their OTHER city blocks tenfold in the 1930's. Wander the halls of state governments where one commodity owns the entire lawmaking infrastructure ("Empire of Oil") in 1958. "America's 60 Families" takes you on an adventure of power manipulation and crooked lawmakers that our biggest movie producers can't describe. Get a good feel for why we needed Anti-Trust laws, and then swallow your red pill when you realize that the anti-monopoly rules only made it into law because another entity allowed them. Liberty? Free markets? Not on your life, pal. This is FAMILY business!
...and that was in 1938.
