For over 65 years, the United States war machine has been on auto pilot.  Since World War II, the world has believed that US foreign policy means well, and that America's motives in spreading democracy are honorable, even noble.  In this startling and provocative book from William Blum, one of the United States' leading non-mainstream chroniclers of American foreign policy and author of the popular online newsletter, Anti-Empire Reports, demonstrates that nothing could be further from the truth.  America's Deadliest Export is the in-depth exposé of the many contradictions surrounding the nature of US foreign policy.

Review

"A fireball of terse information—one of our best muckrakers." - Oliver Stone

"Coruscating, eye-opening and essential. This is a must-read for anyone rightfully concerned at the destructive influence of the world's only superpower." - Cynthia McKinney, Presidential Candidate for the Green Party of the United States

"William Blum's
America's Deadliest Export is another in his blockbuster series that has applied the reality and morality principles to work on U.S. foreign policy. This book has vignettes and longish essays on matters running from Conspiracies, Ideology and the Media to Cuba, Iran and Wikileaks. It is brimming with wit and with both laughable and frightening quotations. It is admittedly written for 'the choir,' but even the choir needs encouragement as well as facts and analyses that will keep its members from succumbing to a potent propaganda system. And we may hope that choir will grow with books like this that both amuse and enlighten." - Edward S. Herman, co-author of The Politics of Genocide

"This book deals with unpleasant subjects yet it is a pleasure to read. Blum continues to provide us with convincing critiques of U.S. global policy in a freshly informed and engaging way." - Michael Parenti, author of
The Face of Imperialism

"With good cheer and humor Blum guides us toward understanding that our government does not mean well. Once we've grasped that, we're far more capable of effectively doing good ourselves." - David Swanson, author of
War is a Lie

About the Author

William Blum is one of the United States' leading non-mainstream experts on American foreign policy. He left the State Department in 1967, abandoning his aspiration of becoming a Foreign Service Officer because of his opposition to what the US was doing in Vietnam. He then became a founder and editor of the Washington Free Press, the first "alternative" newspaper in the capital. Blum has been a freelance journalist in the US, Europe, and South America. His stay in Chile in 1972-3, writing about the Allende government's "socialist experiment," and then its tragic overthrow in a CIA-designed coup, instilled in him a personal involvement and an even more heightened interest in what his government was doing in various corners of the world. He is the author of Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II, and the controversial bestseller Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower. He currently sends out a monthly Internet newsletter, the Anti-Empire Report.

There is nothing really new in this book. America. Foreign Policy is ripped to shreds in a way that would make Chomsky proud. One sided to the extreme the author presents the far left version of world affairs and does so cogently, it's really to his disservice that al queda so publicly endorses it, although to a half awake reader the endorsement is unnecessary. Anyway though one sided I found some truly insightful analysis here. After all being so biased toward the left doesn't nullify all of his arguments! Also I love the dark humor and engrossing writing style of the author. For these reasons it gets 5 stars.

U.S. foreign policy in all the painful details, unfortunately. And the foreign policy still continues. Great book, a must read. So many great examples and quotes, to which I have never paid attention before when the politicians actually spoke in public, but now reading those and doing some research and finding then in their original sources, it's very enlightening as for what kind of politicians we have and how "well" they represent us. An eye-opener.

I primarily chose this book to read a little history of foreign policy the media, and our government filters. I am fascinated with Cold War history, and take great interest in learning as much as possible about the lies I was sold throughout my childhood. This book did that. The author is very knowledgeable, and provides great sources for further research. My only complaint is Mr. Blum's use of humor, and his overall pessimistic views of the U.S.. I admit, several instances were laugh out loud funny in an angry Lewis Black fashion. I also acknowledge that I am probably overly sensitive, as a veteran who personally knows great men who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country, and their faith in the goodness of America. Not one of them ever enlisted to serve any government officials, or any particular foreign policies. They had a genuine sense that their service was for the protection of their families and communities. They were sold lies. I also currently work with several veterans, and I can assure you that Mr. Blum's disgust in our foreign policy is shared with many of my colleagues. But I found his humor (at times) insensitive to the lives lost due to U.S. foreign policies. I am very much anti war, and despise several U.S. actions sold to the American people as righteous or as security necessities. But some things I don't find a laughing matter, and was a little offended. Regardless, I highly recommend this book and found it very informative and the reader is left with a sense of hope for humanity. Just be aware that the writing style may not be for everyone.

Perfect Title for this book which gives chapter and verse on why Democracy (should be in quotes) bc what we think of Democracy and what is and has been, uh, exported....are absolutely deadly and horrible and complete 180s from what corporate media tells us. I used to wonder growing up why "We" always seemed to be on the wrong side. Well, this book and others have informed me "we" weren't. Our Gov't was supporting the so-called rebels, renegades, etc., and learned why. These Democratically elected Presidents and leaders of other countries, particularly in So. America (too close for comfort) were Socialist, and for a Country led by the nose by special interest groups and int'l businesses, where Capitalism - rampant out-of-control Greed-mongering is what it is - could not have Socialist gov'ts succeed in our hemisphere. For this, they have been punished for decades. We have a horrifying history! May God forgive us. Socialism is NOT Communism, but that's trotted out every time FREE Medical Care for everyone is brought up. We're the only Western Country that does not provide that for Its Citizens. The only Country that does not provide FREE higher education for Its People. Socialism puts the Community's welfare and health in first place rather than only 1% of it as we have here.

Among many ugly descriptions of invasions. killings, disruptions in small third world countries, the message is clear. The cold war never existed. It was created to maintain fear and fund the military industrial complex. This book using the ignominious title of America's Deadliest Export
describes the ruthless foreign policy of the United States of America. I was told 30 years ago about this bit ignored it like most Americans. It is easy to be patriotic when we are told we are an exceptional nation.

Not being satisfied with only this book, I have continued my readings to include books about the Dulles Brothers, the CIA, NSA and the Pentagon. Combine this with several books about the Kennedy Assassination and I feel ashamed of my countries' heritage. Not only is our foreign policy criminal but so is the national media for its biased coverage.

As I look at the news of the day, I am siding with Crimea and its desire to secede from Ukraine.
If only the South had been successful with its secession against Lincoln and the North, we might be witnessing a far different history. Sadly, I also wonder what involvement the CIA will turn out to have in the missing Malaysian flight. My eyes are open. Are yours?

The author made really good points about American democracy, which he fell short of calling plutocracy, and about the weaknesses of capitalism. I am surprised that he doesn't buy the 9/11 conspiracy theory. If anyone has the capability to do that kind of thing. wouldn't it be Washington? Also, I m not sure if I agree with his conclusion that capitalism is bad and socialism is good. If its drawbacks, especially the fact that it is greed-driven, are fixed, capitalism could work.
