Though largely forgotten today, one of the most destructive terrorist groups in the United States was the Galleanists, a fiery band of Italian anarchists active during the early 1900s. In America’s Forgotten Terrorists, Jeffrey D. Simon shows how alienation and frustration among segments of a community were transformed into a militant extremist movement.

Luigi Galleani, a gifted writer and speaker, tapped into widespread disappointment among Italian immigrants concerning their lives in America. Unemployment, low wages, long working hours, discrimination, and a poor quality of life made many Italian immigrants receptive to his words. The Galleanists introduced terrorist tactics and strategies that are still used today: they were the first group to send package bombs across the country and to exploit the media for their own advantage. One of their members is also suspected of launching the first vehicle bomb in the United States in 1920, considered the worst act of domestic terrorism until the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

The story of the Galleanists is a chilling journey through a volatile period in American history, including labor-management conflicts, World War I, and the Red Scare. "America's Forgotten Terrorists: The Rise and Fall of the Galleanists" is an authoritative description of a domestic terrorist group that was very active in the early 1900's. The leader was an Italian immigrant named Galleani .....hence the group name, Galleanists. Galleani was a powerful personality who gave influential speeches, published a newsletter, and participated in group activities......all of which attracted followers. Galleanists were antigovernment; they blew up things and killed people, and they were pretty good at it. They even had a bomb-making handbook for amateurs that gave instructions on how to make bombs, advised how to get the necessary materials without notice, described safety practices, and included tips on doing the bombing without getting apprehended. And, all this was wrapped in an anarchist manifesto.

Simon's book is well written in a comfortable reading style. It's a good read from both a historic and a terrorist viewpoint. The author is a scholar and it shows.

I highly recommend this book.

For history buffs and those interested in the earliest acts of terrorism in the United States, America's Forgotten Terrorists-the Rise and Fall of the Galleanists, by Jeffrey D. Simon, is a must read. The narrative follows the activities of a group of Italian anarchist immigrants, the Galleanists. Simon masterfully weaves together in great detail the motives, strategies, and of course the acts of sheer terror (mostly bombings) the Galeanists employ to accomplish their goals. The author also highlights with significance the many key players involved, including the anarchists themselves, important investigators, and politicians. The book explores the political and social ramifications of the events depicted, and expertly reveals a part of our history that is educational, enlightening, and frightening.

This book was exciting the whole way through and tells an exciting story about an Italian terrorist group and their rise to notoriety in America. It is clear that the author is very knowledgeable about the subject and does a great job telling the story. I could definitely see this being made into a film due to how engaging and dramatic the story is. I was unaware of this author until he was recommended to me by a friend of mine but after reading this book of his, I will definitely be reading more!
