Adult/High School-Bohrer offers a timely look at these elite troops. The first five chapters provide an in-depth look at each of the military services' special operations, including a short history of the unit, qualifications to begin the rigorous training program, the actual training program, how the units are organized, the equipment and weapons used, and potential missions. The final chapter offers a short essay on their future. Although each service is examined in detail, almost half the book is dedicated to the Army's Green Berets and Rangers, who make up the majority of the special-operations forces. The book is lavishly illustrated with color photographs that enhance the well-written, easy-to-understand text. This book will have appeal to teens because of the on-going war against terrorism. It should be noted, however, that it was written prior to the war in Afghanistan. Hence, there is no information on current operations.

Decent Book. Pretty outdated now. Still some applicability and of historical interest.

Solid 4-star rating.

I would like to provide textual content on that Rating as part of this Review, however am unable to do so. The ACDLT has restricted ability to Comment or Reply (without any prior warning, any specific notification, any identification of specific alleged problems or appeal).

That being so, an inability to respond to Review comments by others (positive, negative, indifferent) would be unfair to myself and others.

But it is a solid 4-star book in this genre.

I disagree with a previous post claiming this book is a classic. It is not, but that doesn't make it a bad book either. To the contrary, I found this book provided good info on the various special operations forces it covered. I too was disappointed though to find Delta was not covered in this book. And the fact that the Pentagon still doesn't acknowledge them is a joke, everyone knows they exist, and there's plenty of pictures available of them and their gear so thats no excuse to exclude them. The author's portayal of those branches covered however was very good, making this book a mixed bag rating-wise.

I would say that this book is very good. I would like to point out to some of the other reviewers that Delta Force is not a separate Special Force but rather a detachment of the First Special Forces Group. Hence the name First Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta. This is probably why the unit did not get it's own chapter in the book.

A great glimpse into special forces

This is a great book to see the current state of America's special forces. Rich in photos, one can get a feel for the different units and the role each plays. It is somewhat umbalanced, however, in the tiny section written on Air Force Special Operations at one end and the heavy attention given to SEALS at the other. All in all, it is a fine reference book on the subject and is equally at home on a coffee table as it is in a military book collection.

The Best Book Ever!

Wow! This is simply the greatest book on special operations ever! It has the most photos, the most details, and the most information I have ever seen on a special forces unit. I recieved this book for Christmas and it is one of my favorite books. Despite all these high points, the book falls short on adequetly explaining the gear and weapons each unit uses. Although they do provide tons of information on exactly that, they do not go into detail what exactly they use. For example, in the Army Rangers section, they say the basic weapon is the M-16 and M-60. However, they don't tell what the rest of them are. The book also fails to explain the Delta Force and some other Marine special forces units adequetly. Nevertheless, this is a great book, and anyone interested in special forces should own one.

Aside from those reviews that claim "OH MY GOSH! I knew NOTHING about this and now its like an expert!!!", most of the reveiws are pretty decent. So I decided to write a good review. First off the good. The info in this book is very good and the photos are stunning. The bad. Not alot of information on weapons and/or training. I was slightly disapointed. The ugly: None of it was ugly
