Black Isn’t Black
I used Superior Black when trying to make some black play dough. The mix is white before color is added and I was surprised that it made the mix green. I ended up using the whole bottle and still only had a deep green color.I got some on my hands and counter- both were dyed pink. Thankfully, it came out well. Also, once heated and made, the playdough did end up looking black. When diluted with water to clean the pans, the dye became purple.I’m not sure what colors are in this dye, but I wouldn’t trust using the black shade for anything else.

I bought it because I was told it doesn't turn your teeth black when you eat something colored with it (as long as you are coloring chocolate frosting). This IS true if you eat one black cupcake with black frosting. Your teeth remain white. However, our guests who ate two cupcakes? Yeah.... They had some issues. The dye stuck in the corners of their teeth making them look a little 1960s British. (Oops.)
We sent leftover cupcakes home with family and friends. No one felt ill or anything after eating them but.... You know how if you eat beets, your 💩 turns red? Yeah.... If you eat a LOT of this? Apparently, your 💩 turns purple. This would be laughable but... I heard it stained some toilet bowls. 😬 (Yes. I got phone calls. 🤭)
All that aside, I absolutely would use it again. I just wouldn't offer anyone seconds or thirds. (Or I'd use different cupcake / frosting recipes and not use the whole bottle making 24. 🤷)

This is a great product! I used it to make Black Velvet Cupcakes with Black Velvet Frosting for my husband's 50th birthday. It was beautifully black! So many kinds of food coloring just turn things grey. But this one? True black!!Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019

I did want to mention, though, for those who think this might be a really great deal - the bottle
you see in the photo is NOT the bottle you are purchasing. You are getting one of the very small (under 3" tall)
drop bottles, not one of the large ones shown in the photograph. I wanted to point that out, because for people who
are only looking at the photos, it is misleading. Not sure why some sellers feel the need to be sneaky, but
I guess they try for more sales that way.
I'll be back to review the actual gel once we are done with the project.
Just don't expect the big bottle when you purchase from this listing.
UPDATE:
Well, I am now a HUGE fan of the gel coloring!
It worked like a dream, gave us a beautiful frosting that looked like black leather (but soft).
No purples or blues, no weird shades - just great color.
Now I will probably have to get more colors, because with these, I might start decorating cupcakes again!
I am adding a photo of our cookout cupcakes that we used the frosting for... it all looked great!

I ran out of black food coloring and was unable to find any more in stores. So I thought I’d try this one. Wow!! I’ve always had difficulty making a true black shade of icing for my cookies, but this made it so easy!! I didn’t need a whole lot for this batch (just for the turkey eyes), but I am floored by the how easy it was to reach the blackness that I wanted. Bravo Americolor! I will be your food coloring customer for life now!

I used melted dark chocolate AND cocoa powder to start the buttercream. If you want black buttercream, always start with a brown. If you dont want chocolate flavoured buttercream, use brown food colouring, but always start with a brown buttercream before trying to make it black.
At first, when I added the black, it looked very dark grey and kind of shiny?? But I left it in the fridge for 2 nights and voila!! true jet black buttercream icing!!
TIP: let the buttercream rest for a minimum on 48 hours in the fridge and I promise, you WILL get true jet black. I wrapped mine in cling film. Also, I used it in dark chocolate ganache. i only used 2 tiny drops and I got the perfect jet black for a drip effect.
