I read this book when it was published in the 1970s. I remember feeling ambivalent about it then. The female protagonist is right out of the 1970s woman's liberation movement, not my cup of tea, though I too am a product of it. In terms of a Regency era woman she does not fit her period. I can't quite like her. ...And yet I have remembered the title and the book for 30 years. There is something about this story that transcends its weaknesses. I recently ordered a copy of the book to reread it. My opinion of it hasn't changed much. It is a rather silly story, but steadfastness in friendship and love (the meaning of the amethyst of the title) is a hard-to-beat characteristic for a love story.
I'd actually rate this 3-1/2 stars.
