Started listening to SOJA with "Born in Babylon". I wasn't a big fan of SOJA's "Strength to Survive" album, but I am very pleased with their latest album "Amid the Noise And Haste"... I'm not sure I can articulate why, so I won't even try - which makes for a pretty crummy review, and I'm sorry for that. All I can contribute is this: if you were at all disappointed with "Strength to Survive", give them another shot...I'm glad I did!

This album is incredibly fun. As more of a "roots" kinda guy who looks upon "white" reggae bands with a bit of hestitation, I was plesantly surprised by the musical caliber of this band, both on their album as well on their latest tour for the album. Big band, big sound, with a good melodic feel to it. The lyricist may have a bit of a frat boy tinge, but some of his lyrics are really deep and emotionally uplifting.

The album has a very varied sound, and rhythms tend to be all over the place. "Tear It Down" might be the most powerful reggae tune of the entire decade so far, and was an excellent first introduction to the band. "Your Song" brings along the familiar and mighty Jr. Gong to help out, and that killer bass line melts my soul like butter. "Easier" has a wonderful roots feel to it, and "Shadow" might be the second best tune on the album with its wonderful melodies and bass-line.

Some tracks really are misses unfortunately. "I Believe" is just silly, "Once Upon A Time" has subjects a bit too off the mark for Reggae (You're a popular reggae singer, no one is surprised an ex might be infatuated with you, and I don't think anyone wants to hear a song about it either). "Lucid Dreams" is another track that felt like it was brutally injected by a white frat boy into what should be a stronger roots album. In other words, there are a few tracks here which keep the album from being a 5, and it's when they try to cater to things that stray too far from the reggae foundation and "whiten" things up. (And please accept my apologies for any racial overtones - I have to critically compare this to artists like Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru folks)

Overall a great, attractive album from a rising set of stars in the genre. I would definitely see them live again, and quite frankly I'm up for the ride of checking out their other albums and seeing what comes in the future.

Great Cd....good jams. More poppy than older albums but a solid release. Some people complain these guys sold out. If selling out means they're tired of touring non-stop and making little money for their great music and now they're ready to finally make a living, then I support them selling out. SOJA is great and this CD is catchy and their path, as a band, is exactly what you want to see from creative people; put in your time, pay your dues and then get some success. Go see them live...they're great.

I've seen these guys play some pretty small bars and coffee shops back in the DMV, even noticed them at two different Jr. Gong shows enjoying the shows and to see them with Jr. Gong on their album is great. But they've earned it with many great albums throughout the years and this new one is no different. The sound is a bit more evolved from previous work but they've always been trying to expand their sound so it's nice to see them grow as a band so. This is its own album and not a clone of any other of theirs, except in great reggae with conscious lyrics.

I was a little disappointed with this album. The songs didn't grab me like previous albums. I really like the song with Michael Franti but other than that, I don't care too much for the songs. A little bummed because I really like the band. I will keep listening to their older CDs.

Very good album. I was actually pretty surprised how much I like this album, some of the songs are a little more poppy and mainstream but it didn't seem to take away from the rest of it. There are a couple of songs I didn't care too much for but it's still an album that I can listen to every song, there's no songs that I absolutely hate. I love songs like "believe" and "translation of one" and "tear it down", very chill but also extremely strong and powerful lyrics. Good job guys!

All I can say is wow! Soja keeps amazing my imagination with new beats and lyrics that keep you constantly thinking about staying positive, getting back to nature, and doing our best to love on another no matter what our differences. This is the kind of music everyone should listen to and the mentality we could only dream everyone would have. Tear it down, Shadow, and Translation of One are my absolute favorites on this album, but I enjoy all of them. Soja has put another amazing album out while continuing to spread the same message they have since day one. One Love
