Product Description

Weekends are even better when you make pizza with our Amish crafted pizza paddle. Uniquely designed with chamfered edges all the way around to allow the paddle to easily slip underneath pizza crust, breads or biscuits to remove them from your oven wrack or baking stone. You can even cut and serve your pizza right from the paddle, no need to dirty another pan. The 18' long design keeps you away from the heat. Constructed from quality Baltic Birch plywood this paddle will not warp unlike other solid wood paddles on the market. To clean just wipe with a damp cloth and frequently apply food-grade oil to maintain the surface. This dual-use paddle measures approx. 18 by 14 inches.

I bought this because it indicated that it is Amish made. Amish furniture is noted for it's quality, so I thought this would be a quality product as well. It is very sturdy and does not bend, but the wood is very rough at the edges and even on the surface where you place the pizza. If you start to rub your fingers over it, it is very rough and feels like you could get a splinter if you continue. I was disappointed with the quality.

I bought this as a tool in my new obsession: Artisan Bread in Five Minutes A Day The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking. The book teaches you a wet no-knead method of making sourdough bread. You shape the dough into a ball and let it "rest" on a floured pizza peel and then slide it from the peel onto the pizza stone in the oven.

This pizza peel was ideal for this, despite a couple of caveats. First, the good: It's just the right size for a half-pound ball of dough, specified in the book. It's nicely made, apparently hand-crafted, attractive, and a pleasure to use.

As for my caveats, the first is that, like other reviewers, mine was roughly sanded. However, I did run my fingers all over it and did not get a splinter, and the sanding job did not interfere with the function. It is just a contrast from the smooth perfect machine surfaces we're used to.

Also, like some cutting boards, it comes unfinished. You can oil with a food-grade mineral oil, avoiding olive oil or other oils that can go rancid. I used this oil: Snow River 8-Ounce Wood Oil .

I used the peel several times before I got around to finishing, and it worked fine. The rough surface was not an issue either before or after oiling it.

Other caveats: If you are using this for pizza, it is only large enough for a personal-size pizza, not a full-size pizza.

I would give this pizza peel more stars except it was smaller than the dimensions given. The working surface of the blade is not 14". It is only 12.75" wide and 11.5" long. The entire length of the peel is 18" from the top of the handle to the tapered edge of the blade. Otherwise, it works well for sliding your pizza onto your pizza stone.

This is a great product. Its simple to pull the pizza out of the oven with and much better to slice the pieces on than the cardboard the pizza comes with. Perfect size. I would recommend this product to anyone.

Large!! beautifully made and can double as a serving platter. Most other peels had glued seams, this was one solid piece of wood, very satisfied with purchase.

We use it all of the time. Great workman ship, exactly as described and exactly what we needed. And I love that it is made here in the USA!

I used this peel about one to two times a week and had it for about three months. I would wash and air dry it immediately after use. Despite this the plywood started to pull apart, especially along the edges. Other customers are right about the rough texture and poor workmanship issues too (sad because we get Made in USA assuming it would be good quality). I recommend you invest in another item.
