About the Author

Jo Noelle grew up in Colorado and Utah but also spent time in Idaho and California. She has two adult children and three small kids. She teaches teachers and students about reading and writing, grows freakishly large tomatoes, enjoys cooking especially for desserts, builds furniture, sews beautiful dresses, and likes to go hiking in the nearby mountains. Oh, and by the way, she’s two people—Canda Mortensen and Deanna Henderson, a mother/daughter writing team.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Cassie is going to heaven—if she can get amnesty from hell in the next twenty days. Her assignment is to change the eternal destination of a girl in Albuquerque to earn admittance into heaven.

No sweat.

But when Cassie returns to earth during her three-week, mostly-mortal assignment, her old habits get in the way, (apparently habits don’t die when you do), the partners assigned to help her are anything but helpful, and it turns out the girl she is supposed to help is the only enemy she made on her first day of school.

Oh, I’m so going to hell.

Things aren’t all bad—it helps to have a hot angel on your side. Mmm-Marc. Even though he’s all about heavenly business, Cassie would like to make it personal.

Assignment with benefits.

MY TAKE
This was the last of the Jo Noelle books that I'd not read yet. I've loved her writing and truth-to-life characters, right down to the uncomfortable imperfections. AMNESTY is no exception. Cassie, dealing with the anger, hurt, and feeling of desertion by her parents has chosen to act out and do dangerous and stupid things. While that's not uncommon for adolescents to lash out as they try to find their own identities, Cassie's negative and selfish feelings have amplified the disaster she creates for herself. And it lands her right on the road the hell. Literally.

After causing her own death and the death of her two best friends, she's faced with burning forever. Until she's given a chance at amnesty. But it places her in a position of being responsible to turn someone else away from the road to hell.

AMNESTY deals with the issues of choices and consequences, all intermingled with the question of whether we can really change. I love stories that touch on ethical issues and make me think. Noelle's characters are engaging and smack-worthy, all at the same time. Just like real teenagers.

A great read that will make you think.

Format: Kindle Edition
PG13
Violence: mild to moderate (fist fighting, kidnapping, assault)
Language: a few swear words
Sex: no sex, but there is an incidence of descriptive kissing and talk of "making out," but no details.

The h is a "troubled teen," so there's an underage drinking scene, and some references to drugs. This is such a thought-provoking book! I loved the very clever premise. There was romance and intrigue. Great for 8th grade through adult. Good for opening conversation with teens or book club.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

I had no idea this book was going to be this great. I could not put it down. From the very first chapter I was sucked into it's pages. You felt Cassies's struggles and heartache and I was left bawling like a baby in the last couple of chapters.

After making some very bad decisions in life Cassie finds herself at the pearly gates facing judgment. Her only chance at heaven is to be granted amnesty by saying Talese…t he only girl that appears does not want to be saved.

She quickly meets Owen, her fellow Gate team member also assigned to Talese, on the first day of school. But soon learns this assignment is going to prove more difficult than she thought. Talese is head B-Otch and has no problem telling her how she feels about her. Everything Cassie does seems to backfire and push Talese farther away.

All the while someone is trying to kill Cassie. If she dies before her assignment is over it's game over. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars. She gets a one way ticket to Hell.

Her only salvation is her Gate Handler Marc. She travels to the Gate often for guidance but quickly realizes that she is traveling to be close to the only good thing left in her life…him. Their attraction grows but just when she needs him the most he leaves her.

Broken down and hopeless Cassie must fight if she wants to survive. Will she be able to save Talese and herself?

Favorite Scene: The epic end scene with Talese
Favorite Quote:

Amnesty, by the mother/daughter writing team known as Jo Noelle, is an intriguing, suspenseful story of love and redemption.

From the blurb:

This young adult novel is a coming of age story with a clean romance, packed with action and suspense.

I don't even know where to begin. I have so much love for this book! It's been a while since I read something so unique, fresh, and exciting that I couldn't wait to push life aside to bury my head between the pages.

This intriguing tale begins when Cassie “borrows” her friend's new car and decides to take it for a spin—while drunk. Things don't end well, leaving Cassie and the two friends she dragged with her dead. She's given a chance at amnesty from damnation. Cassie must return to earth and has twenty days to change the trajectory of another teen's life. If she succeeds, amnesty, but if she fails, eternal damnation.

Cassie is on the Gate Team, but there's another team out there thwarting her every move—I'm sure you can imagine who that team works for.
