This is an excellent sequel to her splendid book, Teaching the Trees. Maloof's love letters to Old Growth and resplendent nature represent the best of today's environmentalism, tattered as it has become with sloganeering, sophistry, and sentimentalism. Among the Ancients should be required reading especially for federal and state politicians--and their policy wonks--as they seek to understand how to preserve the requisites of modernity while conserving rare and sensitive habitats, minimizing the impact of culture on wild nature.
