About the author

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.
Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.
She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

I was not expecting Leo to be who he is & for how he & Riley met. What “Riley” went through was horrible & honestly she wouldn’t have survived if it wasn’t for Leo. He’s such a good friend to Riley but he has his own demons to sort through as well. Easily & the quickest 5 stars I have given for a book, no doubt about it 🫶🏻
There’s no doubt about it I was intrigued by those two little words with such impact, and as I kept on reading I knew right away that I was in for the long haul. The author definitely gives her readers a well-written novel full of suspense and hot romance with characters that are quite likeable. I’m not going to lie, the story is predictable but the author does a great job keeping the reader’s attention engaged throughout. The chemistry between the protagonists, Slate and Riley, definitely sizzles. Now this is where I tell you that I absolutely loved Slate. What’s not to love? The guy’s a boxer with a ripped body that would put any man to shame. He’s an alpha male – the kind that really turns me on. He’s also sexy, gorgeous, and oh so romantic. Here’s a man who never ever stopped thinking of Riley, always making sure that Riley never forgot him either. I’m a huge fan of novels that’s told from both H/h POV. I really love reading the male’s perspective as it always gives the reader a better insight as to who they are, not to mention being intimate with all their feelings and emotions for the heroine, which in turn either has you drooling over the hero, or wishing for disinfectant.
Why four stars and not five? Even though I loved the story, there just seemed to be something missing from the story. The more I thought about it, the more I’m convinced it has to do with Dave. Though not a romantic interest of Riley’s, I still considered him to be a principal player, a “protagonist” if you will. He’s such an integral part of not just the story, but of Riley’s life. Most definitely more of his POV would’ve rounded out and completed the story.
Then there’s the ending. While predictable, it’s obvious the climactic scene will come to fruition towards the end, and when it does? Let’s just say it was quite disappointing. Not only was it rushed, I found it to be completely ridiculous. Right from the beginning we know what Riley went thru, and all throughout we know who is after Riley and Dave and why. It’s ingrained in us that their lives are in danger in epic proportions. And yet when it all comes to head, not only did it wrap up quickly, it’s anti-climactic and boring. It deserved so much more, but instead fell flat.
One last thing, kudos to the author for not following the norm of having both the H/h “broken.” Yes, Slate did have a difficult upbringing but he’s well-adjusted. The story doesn’t dwell on what he does for a living or his past relationships. He loves boxing and knows what he wants out of life, and with whom he wants to share it. The only thing that consumes him is his love for Riley and wanting to always protect her.
Regardless, in the end I still recommend you all give this book a read. Not to mention this is a stand-alone novel which should please quite a few. And for the rest of us who wanted more of Dave, it looks like his story is in the works.
Slate "Adam" Andrews is the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. He's been a fighter for fifteen years and he's never liked the celebrity life. After every fight he takes a month off, away from the spotlight to relax, returning to where he grew up in Ohio, to an apartment building he now owns. It is there that he meets a woman in the hallway who acts paranoid and unstable and that he's afraid may have recognized him but the man he is cannot let that first encounter be the end of things.
Slate is a great hero, very protective and capable of much tenderness. There are things in his own past that makes him recognize the behavioral tendencies in Erica and he takes it upon himself to protect her even from the only man she trusts. Their beginning is a tenuous friendship that as it strengthens enables Erica to grow in confidence and leads to so much more as the attraction between them is evident and cannot be denied as much as it scares Erica.
The first two chapters are quite devastating but necessary to understand what the heroine went through. They are difficult to read and I give the author credit for their not being more graphic. There is much suspense and action and some twists that you won't see coming. The storyline is great. The relationship between the H and h is filled with emotional depth, charm, humor, understanding as well as tangible chemistry and sexiness.
What better person is there to protect a woman in hiding than the heavyweight champion of the world, a millionaire recluse, when her truth is known to him. Erica is a survivor, a woman who regains her strength and sense of self throughout this story, a woman who completely surprises this reader in the end, she took her life back and this reader was so proud of her. These were two great characters. I loved having more than one point of view which adds to character depth for this reader. I am looking forward to the next book which is about the man who was in hiding with Erica, her first savior and trusted friend; a most intriguing character.

This book is quite dark in parts, it does contain scenes of sexual abuseso if that is a trigger for you, be aware.
Erica is such a strong character, she's resilient, a survivor and I really admired her. Slate is just a God among men! I think he may be one of my favourite ever book boyfriends! He's alpha, protective, sweet and has a rocking bod! He's a freaking heavyweight champ! Drool-worthy stuff, right?
Aly Martinez is fast becoming one of my favourite authors for overprotective alpha males - my favourite kind of males! I can see her books becoming an automatic one-click for me in future. I'm obsessed with this author's books at the moment, if you haven't read her yet then get to it! You won't be disappointed!
