People say that scifi is at it's best when the stories told are human, and shed light on what it is to be human. Robyn Banks does this very well - and puts the books characters through painful trials which I could relate to even if I've never had it as hard as Luke, Alya or Tom. It does well both as a light read (I read a lot of technical stuff) but also one that gave me things to think about. The author writes well about the dynamics of violence, hierarchies, belonging and not belonging.
If you've read the first novel by Banks (Heinlein's Fiches) Among the Stars is set in the same universe, but the I think that the writing has evolved since then. Hope you enjoy this one.
Personally, I feel the first chapter does not do it justice somehow. I'm glad I read on, as I kept wanting to come back to it.
The book is more or less a sci-fi mystery and love story- set in a living, breathing world. Only it features polyamorous love, gender diversity and far more. What surprised me was how relatable the characters were, despite being relatively unusual. Within pages I stopped caring about differences and I'll honestly say it broadened my mind about it without the book ever being preachy or even addressing such topics directly. Ha, hard to describe this quirky, interesting book- but I recommend reading it.
